What color of blue is this gas tank?
« on: December 14, 2014, 09:46:02 AM »
Hello all. Here's the story. The bike is a 74 CB550. The gas tank was found on ebay and was listed as being removed from a 74 CB550. I did NOT do my research and blindly bought it. Fits good and looks ok.  The sticker kit and color has lead me to conclude its from a 75 CB750 and planet blue metallic. But I am not sure, seems to be too light. I purchased colorrite aerosol 2 stage kit PB27MC and planned on spraying the side covers to match. But my spray out (test shoot) looks too dark a blue and missing the green or yellow tint I see in the gas tank paint. So I ask ... what color is this?

Can you get paint color chips from local paint shop? Looks allot like 88 ford truck blue to me.
A few Honda 500's, a few Honda 550's, a few Honda 650's, '72 cb 450, a couple 500/550/650 hybrids, and 2001 750.

I am almost positive that this is the gas tank's factory original paint. Here are some more pictures. The last one includes the planet blue metallic colorrite spray out card.

Them tank appears to be a 550 tank. The rear section where it meets the seat is more "open" than 75 750 tanks I've seen.

I also have a 550 tank in that color, courtesy of SohRon. Don't know the color code but I believe Sapphire Blue is the 550 color name you seek.

Are we sure that is not a '75 750 tank?not

Planet Blue was available that year and it had the black inserts....

The 550K's were not available in blue, and that spray card looks dead on.

Sapphire Blue was a 550F color only, here is my '76...   (Sold a few years ago)

If that is a 550 tank, I'd bet it is not original paint.

That is definately a 550 tank.  No 750 tank has the cap off set like that.  Sure looks like Planet Blue to me, only problem there is no 550 ever offered in Planet Blue?  Maybe some Euro/Japan market experts will have something to say.  The reason your spray out card does not match is because these old candy paint jobs are almost always faded.

I'm not sure but they do fade. My 70 was candy ruby red and now it's almost tomato red.

Wow all this feedback is great!

In reference to "The reason your spray out card does not match is because these old candy paint jobs are almost always faded." (sorry new at this)  Candy? planet blue is metallic. But agreed any nearly 40 year old paint is gonna have a UV fade factor for sure.

And on that note, here some more pics. I believe that other Honda tank is a Candy Sapphire Blue? That one is not original paint but it appears to be a good job color wise.

And the underside of the tank in question, for your viewing pleasure.

I am not sure Planet Blue was candy.  Yes, it is metallic but I believe it was originally sprayed as a candy, i.e. first coat is silver metallic, then 3 or more semi translucent blue color coats are laid on top, then cleared.  Somewhere on this site is a chart that explains all the different layers of paint Honda used to achieve their oem colors.  If you can find a good old school painter that is adept at spraying candy, they may be able to spray the color coats slightly thinner to match the fade of your tank.  I don't believe modern non-candy painting techniques will accurately match your tank.  There are sources for accurate oem style silver bases, candy's and clears.  Try googling Dirt Biker Don and/or Yamiya.

Also wanted to mention, what you have pictured on your spray out card does not look terrible match wise and may be as close you are gonna get without finding original sidecovers, but if the 550 was never offered in Planet Blue, this seems like a very unlikely possibility.

This video only shows 750 colors but I found it handy nonetheless.

Your color looks a lot like mine.  8)  but lighter ?

I bought it from US and thought it to be Candy Sapphire Blue to match my CB750 K6.

People also tel me Planet Blue metallic should be the color, but I doubt, as you do.

As you can see the color also "changes" depeding on the light.

Luckily I have matching sidecovers, but I wanted to paint my Helmet to match.....

Sometimes it looks like CB750 K0 Candy Blue/ Green...

Unfortunately the seller does not respond to my mails.

Conclusion is 550 tank with faded planet blue metallic. But I would like to know where this combination was imported to, cause I truly believe this to be the original factory paint. Likely somewhere in the EU or its a early in its life, really well done re-paint. Thank you all for your help.

Next topic: head gasket...that is if I cant find a NOS OEM on Ebay.

I'd think this is a repaint, but I could swear I saw one of these years ago.
Never seen this color advertised anywhere...
