Best size tyres for a 400/4
« on: February 06, 2014, 08:33:35 PM »
Hi

I am just about at the end of a restore/rebuild of my 75 CB400f I would like to know what the best size/type tires to fit to it.

I will be using the bike quite a bit so want good tires that will fit under the guards.

Cheers

dont try and use over width tyres, youll just turn slower and wear the centre tread out, stay with the stock sizes.

metric equivalents will be ok if imperials are hard to find in new zealand, its only a fraction anyway, metrics give you a wider choice of very good tyres,i use them,i never look for imperials, sport demons and dunlop 501 are my choice if you live and ride in a hilly twisty area like me,bt45s are the old default tyre these days, you will be happy with either of the three, the bt45 gives the best mileage,i like new tyres so i dont mind ones that run shorter,i know tyres cost more your way but try and keep away from the temptingly cheap ching wa wee type brands.

I'm with Fred. Stock rims are narrow by modern standards so you really want to keep the tires narrow also. I would go no larger than 100/90 front and 110/90 rear but would recommend the same sizes that Fred did.

I am a fan of the Roadriders and have used them on two different bikes. My Enfield, which is a similar size and weight to the 400 (but with 19" wheels front and rear) really did well with them, they just transformed the handling and ride.
