CBR with frame damage
« on: January 03, 2014, 12:38:47 PM »
I went down to Minnesota about a month ago to check out this bike. Their was a small dent in the frame but it wasn't on the main rail of the frame, so I wasn't concerned. The guy selling the bike was not the owner of the motorcycle. But the title was signed by the owner. This man told me that the previous owner didn't report any of the damage to the insurance company so the bike was never totaled. Thinking that the title was clean (which it appeared to be) I picked it up for a mere 1,100.

So today I went to the DMV to get a title transfer. The lady at the DMV informed me that bike was listed as having a salvaged title. Apparently Minnesota does things a little differently than North Dakota. She said that Minnesota "washes" (she said washes) their titles so that the word salvage will not appear on the piece of paper that is the title. So now I've got to take the bike to some shop I've never heard of in a extremely small town (you would think I would've heard of it) to get a inspection and the frame is one thing they look over. Its also the only thing I'm concerned about. I've attached a few pictures. Does anyone have any experience with something like this? Any idea if It would pass an inspection?

It's a 2003, I'm not too worried about the ride-ability. I'm mostly worried about investing and fitting this bike with lights, turn signals, gauges, some mirrors,a horn, taking it into the inspection shop, and getting told that they cant pass it because of the dent in the frame. Here's some more pics

The dent appears to be no more than 2-3 mm deep and around an inch and a half in diameter. I also checked that weld and it looked fine. The only thing it looks like it has effected is right side motor mount. It moved it out a little bit. I could easily put it back to where its supposed to be by using the pinch bolt on the bottom. But I don't know if I should be pulling the frame back together. Thoughts?

I guess I should mention that the po had a piece of iron and a #$%*load of washers in place of where that spacer is supposed to be. The mounting bolt on the other side was also not the correct one and he had placed a piece of iron in between the bolt and the frame. Not sure if that was some way he mounted a form of crash protection or what. It's not letting me post pics right now but ill try again later.

Their separate bolts. The right side mount (the side with the dent) has a Allen bolt with a nut on the inside and a machined OD. A spacer goes in between the motor and the frame, and a pinch bolt clamps the frame to the bolt.

The left side is just a threaded bolt into the motor.

Okay I'm at a dilemma. After further inspection of this bike a few months ago I discovered that their was a chunk taken out of the lower crankcase by the clutch cover. Being very pissed off and a cheap bastard I repaired it with some JB weld. Since then I've taken this bike to the track a few times and now its starting to leak a little bit again. So here is my question, would you sell this piece of #$%* hoping someone is stupid enough to buy it, buy a new motor on ebay ($700-$1000), or pull the motor and replace the lower crank case requiring just as much work as a complete rebuild and maybe spend around 300-400 dollars on a new lower case, tools required to do the rebuild, and miscellaneous parts gaskets etc. I've never pulled one of these motors apart before and don't have a lot of time to do it either. Keep in mind this is the same bike with the dent in the frame pictured above.

Over here, if a bike had that much damage it'd probably be written off by an insurance company and not be allowed to be ridden on the road.

There are companies here that specialise in selling "Insurance write off's" for track day use, or spare parts, and you can buy some amazing bikes (Ducati's, MV Agusta F4's, etc etc) for very little money, which appear to have very little damage, but just because it doesn't look like much, an engineer will have a far better idea than anyone here whether or not your bike is still safe to ride on the road.

Worst case scenario is you've still got lots of good parts to sell, so if the engineer tells you that your bike can't be registered, you won't lose your shirt. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

It would be better to sell it for parts and start fresh IMO

Yep, 1100 bucks is not an expensive lesson, but a valuable one, just the same. Cheers, Terry. ;D
