hey this is great info! thanks guys. I went ahead and ordered my rear spokes from cms already, and have front ones on their way too. sending back these cheap thin spokes, I don't have the time to deal with them. garbage.

Do you members know any place that'll send you spokes to spec.? I can figure out the length and the correct gauge diameter on many of the ones I need and just wanted to know of a Quality spoke maker anywhere who has spokes of different sizes for MC's and older mopeds, etc. ?
I know about Buchanan's out in CA.,but are they the only ones ?? ???  ::)

I've not used them, but buchanans comes to mind.  Others say they're very good to deal with and sending samples of your old spokes with your order is the way to go.

They the best, not cheap though, but thet will lace and true your rim and install the new spokes for only $80.00. Now that's a deal! 8) So why do I do my own? Cheap bast&rd! ;D They been around forever. Bought from them since mid '70's! Bill

Bill, does that include the price of the spokes ?
I've bought quality spokes from an overseas company called Sapim before..,but they sold me bicycle spokes,I should check them to see if they also sell other larger ones.Their prices were excellent for Stainless Steel double butted spokes.  8)

Of course not.   A good set of SS spokes from Buchanan's is $114, worth it in my book. I just replaced my K4's front wheel.

Man, that's not fair. You have an EX Honda service manager re-doing your engine?! :)

My CB450 is finished…well not quite so yet. The transmission is slipping in first when the RPMs get up there under aggressive driving. Since my father went through the tranny parts and replaced anything that looked worn, he didn't pay attention much for the clutch. So I'm repacking the clutch right now with new plates and springs. New NOS springs and the old springs show a 2mm height difference...I'm hoping this is the problem.

Hey guys, I'm not dead, but might as well be from all the work I've been doing. We've been super short staffed at work so I'm putting in 70 hour weeks for the last month. I can't thank Bill enough for helping me out while I've been busy. I do have an update but no time to post! Should start assembly in the next week. We're shooting for engine to be done by June and bike to be finished by July!

Any update is good. You just may beat my build now as I had to pull my engine out again and service the transmission.

Make sure your builder plays VERY close to the transmission. Don't just assume that it's OK. Trust me as it sucks to have to pull again. :(

Well thank you so much. Kind words. That's why the 3 replacement shift forks and drum came in this week, a 2000 mile bike and when it started to act up the PO must have jammed it til it quit. Center fork bent the worst, but all 3 bent! Drum ramps chipped! So you are right, better check close! ;D Bill

Chef/Bill- you still in schedule to complete in time for the reunion? Anything we can do to help: locate parts, send some elbow grease down there? This is a build that must meet a deadline. Gotta imagine everyone's pulling for you-

Hey Cal, things should be ok yes. I have a friend of mine coming to help me tomorrow and tuesday. I finally have two real days off and they will be spent turning it into a roller and getting any last soda blasting done.

I still need to order stainless steel brake lines (doing that today hopefully), left hand switch, rectifier/regulator, battery, points, hondaman ignition, tank an side cover badges, and some other odds/ends like hardware. I'm sure something else will pop up as it always does when it's time to put these things back together. I have two roomates who are also going to be helping keep me motivated and help out

LONG overdue update!

I apologize I haven't done too much since the last update. I think Bill has done a better job than me. we boxed up the engine cases in ATL and shipped them to me in SAV. they were supposed to arrive today but no one was home to sign, and they did not leave it. I need to figure out how to get the package now....difficult when I work so many hours as do my roomates. here are a few pictures from Bill's bench as we were taking the tranny out

Plan is to soda blast/clean and paint the cases when it arrives, then ship back.

I put in another big order last night to finish up some hardware and things. pretty much crossed out this list

I also ordered SS brake lines, new seat cover, tank badges, side cover badges, and a sealed AGM scorpion battery just like the ones in my 750s.

Finally got a chance to get some of the pieces together.

things went pretty smoothly so far. only had to take the forks off after I forgot to put the chrome rings or boots on first, ha! stretching the centerstand spring and brake pedal spring were fun too ;)

that's my brother Conor, and it's nice to have a helping hand right here in the house. Good motivation to get it finished.

Now I also picked up another cb450. I was wondering where the HELL was this bike 5 months ago???? 1970 cb450, all there, motor free, feels like good compression, carbs not even stuck shut. amber colored oil in the engine too! was literally found in an old shed so it's fairly preserved. dirty as hell but soda blasting and a good washing took care of that! it has some large ape bars on it so the wiring was hacked a bit. with a battery I get power to the neutral light but not the headlight and I am assuming not the coils either. I just checked it real quick. Haven't really messed with it much.

what's crazy is this was originally candy blue-green under the terrible flat black rattle paint. AND the biggest thing I noticed is the seat! its exactly like the one in the picture I posted. this leads me to believe my dad's bike was a 1970, not a 1971. small hairs sure, but I bought a seat cover like the one HE had, not one like on the 71. that will be recovered and should be the icing on the cake.

anyway the plan for this bike is to make a scrambler out of it. a practical one, not a cafe scrambler or whatever the posers are making these days. I want to find/make some high pipes, hand brush guards, raise rear and front suspension an inch, dual sport tires, trim the seat height, MX handlebars, cb750 fork ears and headlight, make headlight/tailight/turn signal grate brush guards as well. nothing too fancy or expensive. no cutting either! I am not looking to restore or spend crazy amounts of money, I just want to get it on the road....and off the road. not planning on trail riding but I want to get my feet wet with a familiar bike, and without the anguish of the super tall modern dual sport bikes

hahaha Cal you've got a good sense of humor! yeah this house COULD be a party house but I am glad it's not. I am young but definitely of the "get off my damn lawn, kids!" type. I like quiet. the three of us all work a crazy amount so there really has been no time to tend to the jurrasic park thing we have going in the backyard. the front yard gets taken care of though!

chef,
Some 'big ape' put that bike to sleep for a Long time,it's nice of you to wake up 'sleeping beauty'  8)
It'd be great if you could find some Real Weak, cheap paint stripper type of stuff and see if you could remove the rattle can paint;how about a pressure washer? it would work if they didn't prep the tank, sidecovers, etc. and you could have the stock paint back again.I'd like to see that blue  :)
