Professionally laced CB750 rims info
« on: September 05, 2006, 01:09:32 AM »
Hello all,

I've been kicking the idea around about getting new rims for my cb750k5. Did some research and thought I'd share it with those who are thinking the same. May have already been posted but what the hell. I've only looked at Buchanan's spoke and rim so far.

My rims are: D.I.D. 1.85Bx19W (front) and 2.15Bx18W (rear)

To totally replace them the costs are as follows:

Excel aluminum dimpled rim (front) $141 and (rear) $162 + ss spokes and nipples (front) $84 and (rear) $100 + lacing and truing both rims $184 = $671 (OUCH!)

Excel shouldered aluminum rim (front) $165 and (rear) $185 + ss spokes and nipples (front) $84 and (rear) $100 + lacing and truing both rims $184 = $718 (OUCH x 2!)

That doesn't include shipping. In my case from Iowa to California (hubs) and then California to Iowa. God knows what that would cost!

Hope this info was useful. Ride safe.

Hate to be a sour puss, but a more practical solution would be to buy wheels off eBay. Wheels, in excellent condition, come up on eBay all the time for short money.

the shop i've been working with won't touch used rims with a ten foot pole. "Chet" the mechanic was perfectly willing to talk lacing technique with me, share helpful tips and even let me balance my wheel on his truing stand, but he adamantly would NOT touch my old wheel.

liability concerns predominate - only a new wheel will do...

Yeah ebay may very well be the route I go. That or just buy a spoke kit, bottle of Blue Magic, and some new polishing wheels. It's low on the priority list. Just some info I'd thought I share with my fellow CBers.

Hey all - not to hijack, but I just picked up a pair of DID Aluminum rims in stock sizes, with the holes angled apparantly for the disk front and drum rear on my 550F.  Paid CAD$100 for the pair, which seemed reasonable for the rims.

Now, I need to find nice spokes - thought I'd short-circuit the research and just ask the obvious - what sort of spokes should I buy and where should I buy them (call me lazy - I don't mind  ;D )

1976 CB550F for the record.  Stock everything.

You can get spoke kits for the Honda wheels from Buchanan.  Where did you get the rims from?

Yeah - I've been thinking about alloy rims for a while, so jumped on this when I saw it.  Now I need to decide what to lace them to.  I'd love to find a stock set of 550 hubs to clean up, rebuild with new bearings and lace into these so I don't have my bike off the road for more than is necessary.

Anyone with a set of 550 hubs  ;) ?  I have a stock set of 750F wheels though - correct me if I'm wrong - would the front hub be the same?

Too bad more sets can't be had for that price.  Your 750F hub should be the same or very similar.  The rims should lace right up to them.  The only hitch I can think of is if the T500 had a front drum then the angle of the drilled holes on the front rim might be off just a tad.

David Silver - 2 rims & spokes + shipping from England - took less than a week to get them - less than $250.

On eBay, as we speak, for those who want to do it right.

I'm tempted, since it is just over the border.

Loudfastugly.com has a 16 inch rear wheel kit (with tube, stem, slide valve, and metal strip) for 129 plus shipping for anyone interested. I don't work there, but since it was kinda on topic thought i'd share the details.
They also have a 19 with everything minus the spokes for 79 bones.
