crankcase seal replacement
« on: January 15, 2014, 09:25:45 AM »
New member but lurker for some time-so apologies if this is posted incorrectly.

Help Please with this question / issue.

On my 1975 CB400F the Right side (when seated) crank oil seal is weeping / dripping.

I am wondering if this seal can be replaced withOUT splitting the cases. From what I can ell it is a "press in" fit-unlike the Left side seal which has a definite lip to it.

I'd really like to NOT have to split the cases to do this--so if anyone has previously accomplished this please direct me to a link-if available--or provide some advice / encouragement on tackling this issue.

In advance my sincere thanks for any help / input.

Ricardo

Ricardo,

If your are referring to PN 91201-323-005, the crankshaft seal behind the points, you have to split the crankcases to replace it. That seal has a lip because it has to hold oil pressure on the outside main to feed the rod journal.

Keith,

Thank you for the courtesy of your reply and input.

I am in fact referring to OIL SEAL (30X42X8) 91201-300-003 which is part #7 on the parts locator diagram and on the RIGHT side of the bike when seated.

The part you referenced is OIL SEAL (30X45X8)91201-323-005 which is part #8 and is on the LEFT side of the bike when seated. Parts diagram clearly shows a "lip" but unknown about part #7 which is the one I have the issue with.

Thank you for your time and the courtesy of a reply.

Anyone know if part #7 OIL SEAL (30X42X8) 91201-300-003 can be replaced without separating the cases?

Thank you

Ricardo

Its got a lip. This is the seal behind the points plate.
This should be posted in the SOHC/4 Bikes pages... jump on over to this thread already going.

Ricardo,

Sorry, you are correct. I misstated that. However, on a CB350F and a CB400F, both seals are "lipped" and require splitting the crankcases.
