The view out the rear glass is up way too high on the new suv/crossover vehicles to give a reasonable view of whats behind.
For that reason alone is why they're necessary I'd obviously guess.
I've heard people say they'd rather have lower and bigger rear
glass like the older cars had too. I'd also guess that won't happen any time soon. Even the front of some late model vehicles, Camaro comes to mind, are getting hard to see out of. The angle between windshield and dashboard is such that the view if the road is limited to almost tunnel vision. Just my observations.. I'm sure aero dynamics is part of the equation that dictates why the viewing areas
are such. Maybe when they perfect the collision avoidance function/system
they'll install front cameras too. Then there won't be a need to look out the window. ;D Please excuse my sarcasm.  ;)

Call me old fashioned, but I like the acre (hectare) of glass to look out of in my lowly old Volvo 245.

Problem with rear-facing cameras is they don't activate while driving. I mean really, I still have to thrash my head about to double-check the girl I just went past. It's hard too tell if it's a quarter or a nickel in her pocket at first glance...

Guess my eyes are getting old and slow. :-(

Most of those camera's warn you to 'check your surroundings' before backing and I don't think my neighbor heeded that warning. Not to mention he was driving a big new Ford F-150 with a nice big rear glass and no obstruction. He, like too many others, relied too heavily on the backup camera itself.

Please tell me that that flying brick is powered by a stonking V8 Schmitty? ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Your right, but not just back up camera's, also all the other hi-tech gadgets on new vehicles now. Many people think they don't have to do a damn thing anymore other than sit their ass in the driver seat and nothing more and the car is supose to do all the thinking for them ???

The car companies want them to think like that. A lot of folks don't care about anything else either. I don't mean to insult anyone, but pride of ownership/styling/vehicle identity seem to finish last behind computer controlled gadgetry. And that's cool...till something breaks.

I'd like to have one on the back of my 28' race trailer. Even with truck mirrors it's hard to see behind it. At the track in the pits there's a lot of foot traffic, you can get out and look but someone will walk behind you even while you're backing.
Of course on a good day drag  racing you're still there getting winners circle pictures when almost everyone else has gone home and then you can drive straight out.
No matter how many times you paint over a shadow, it's still there.
