Newb with potential
« on: February 28, 2014, 04:53:50 PM »
Hiya folks - I've not owned any of the SOHC Hondas, but I have an opportunity to pick up a 72 CB500 for cheap. Like, under $200. Here's the description from the seller:

"Honestly, I wouldn't recommend the bike for anything other than parting out.  The entire head is useless; the pistons might have some damage from contact with the valves (though they also might be fine); something's up with the alternator (battery wasn't charging back when the motorcycle actually ran); and the carbs will likely need a full rebuild (I cleaned them out, but didn't actually do a rebuild). The exhaust pipe (4 into 1 aftermarket) is pretty rusty, and the mirrors have a bit of rust too, but other than that most of the bike is fine, corrosion-wise.  Everything I didn't mention should be fine."

There's a pic attached. I haven't gotten a chance to go look at it yet. My questions are these: how hard is it to find parts to repair the engine, and how expensive might they be (not specifically, just in general: REAL expensive <-> pretty cheap)? I know that's pretty vague, I'm just looking for some input. I'd buy it just to work on it as a project bike, either restore it or go full cafe.

Buy the bike and post a wtb for an engine. You could be on down the road for like 400$ with a good used engine. 500 or 550 will drop right in and work no problem.

Without a title in Ohio that bike is nothing but parts. Make sure he has a title.

He's willing to take $150, I offered $125, so we'll see - I'll take it at $150 lol! And good point about the title. He says he was riding it last May, so I assume it's titled here, but I asked him about it. Thanks!

…And we all hate you

Go to the FAQ section on the homepage, select the manuals tab in there. Go thru the links, you will have a couple different choices on there. Good luck on the build, make a project thread if you feel so inclined

That is the cost of a tire!   It is not about the bike really!  It is the journey back to a piece of art to ride.  Good luck and patience is your best tool.

If you are in or near columbus, join up with columbus vinmoto, the google group for old bike fanatics in Cbus. Also save your pennies for vintage days at mid ohio where you can pick up a used engine cheap.

@Vinhead1957 - thanks for the sentiment! I've never done anything like this before, so I'm in no hurry. Heck, I'm not even sure if I want to restore or go full cafe or something else lol!

@Geeto67 - thanks for the tip, I'll check it out. I was already planning on hitting the Mid O vintage days, but now I have a real reason lol!

Also just picked up a mint shop manual in binder form off of eBay. I'm looking forward to some warm weather so I can get started (cuz homie don't play dat in a freezing garage)!

toughen up buttercup, if I could go out and work on my 750 in the unheated detached garage, you can too. Just get some decent gloves and wear long johns.

+1 GTO Also get a kerosene heater sure feels good. I have a three car garage. My bike gets the third space so I put up a wall between 2 & 3 so it heats it up perfect.

Good deal!

DO NOT keep track of all the $ you spend on parts/accessories.

This is one case where ignorance is bliss!

Thanks guys! It's actually starting to get over freezing here, so I'm hoping to start the teardown soon. I'll start a project thread at that time.

Dude this is called "Christmas in March."

A complete bike with all those good bits for a buck and a quarter? Seriously?  I don't have friends or relatives who would give each other that good a deal and you got it from a stranger?

Seriously: You don't get to ask for more gifts this year. It wouldn't be fair.

Put on a coat, go get busy.
I recently restored and sold a 77 cb750f, and am nearly finished with a (former basket case) cb750k5.  This is a place to share, learn and enjoy.  I am grateful to and for 99+% of this site's membership.

So, the strategy is to lie to people you are asking for help?

I think I'll be busy going for a ride.

Good luck!
