K6 petcock leaking in off position, need help
« on: March 17, 2014, 01:16:40 PM »
Hi there!

When I bought the fuel tank, it came with a new petcock. It was leaking in "off" position more or less ever since I installed it on the bike. Today I removed it from the tank and disassembled it to see what would have to be fixed and I found that it might not be an original part after all. I don't exactly know which model fuel tank it is (petcock is on left side) but the K6 Petcocks look different on the drawings. Does anybody know which petcock this is and if there is a chance to fix it? Here's what it looks like:

It only has one rubber ring on the inside, the diameter to attach it to the tank is about 19,5mm and it leaks only through the hose into the carbs and drips out from there. Is there anyway to seal this thing?

That look like my K6, left side of the tank.  (right side) Have it on my red avatar bike

The earlier tanks have petcock with dual fuel pipes on right side (wrong side). Trickier to switch to reserve when engine get out of fuel and keep up the throttle at the same time.

Edit. Mine is still not leaking. Switched off 1990, still a few liters of led gas, red and thicker than before ::)

I should buy a new complete petcock.

Do you have a hose clamp on the gas line attached to the petcock?

Make sure your turning it the correct way to the off position and not reserve.

Yes, hose clamp was there.
I think that the OEM hose was a rather thin with clamps like this:

I replaced this with thicker hose and std hose clamp, like a 14mm mini clamp for many years ago, 30 something :)

Make sure that you turn it off. The sign can be mounted upside down?

OFF is 9 o'clock
RES   12 o'clock
ON     6 o'clock

I still feel it in my left hand fingers when I see the photo of the petcock....

Mine also leaked, disassembled & cleaned several times before I realized the spring was causing the spindle to not seat well, I removed the spring and adjusted the nut until the leak stooped & I could still turn the lever.  Leak stopped.

I meant to buy a new petcock...Three years ago.  ;D
