cb750f 1976 electrical questions @ introduction.
« on: October 29, 2014, 02:13:51 PM »
Hello everyone, new to this form. Been doing a lot of reading - lots of good info here.
Little history on myself. Live in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Have owned and ridden both street and dirt bikes for 46 yrs. Last bike was a FJ1200 and presently own and ride a Yamaha yz426f dirt bike.
Just bought a 1976 CB750f that had a Tracy Body Kit on it. After much indecision I decided to take the Tracy body kit off and am converting the bike into a cafe style bike. Bike had last been started in 2002, has 29,000 miles on the clock.
After much work I have it running fairly well.
Finally to my electrical question. There is a plastic box mounted on the left front frame down tube has a bunch of wires ran to it with multiple electrical connections inside. Problem is the plastic box is mostly gone and I have had no luck finding a replacement. Thought about creating a new wiring harness and moving this mess up into the headlight housing but decided I did not want to take that on at this time, maybe later.
Looking for some good ideas on some kind of replacement enclosure for all these connections. Any thoughts or ideas on this would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

welcome,
that enclosure is not stock.  a picture of it, adn your bike, would be a good place to start.  an account with photobucket will allow you to post pictures easily and right away, otherwise there is a post minimum.
you'll have to decipher what they control, and possibly route everything back to where it originally was.

My 76 750F has that box.  I think it is stock on the F model.

Yes, that IS a stock part. Good luck finding a replacement. No longer available from Honda. The 77/78 CB750F do NOT have this. I'm not sure if it would be more trouble to work around this or try to adapt a 77/78 harness but I'm sure you'd have to 'adjust' all the other wires instead. The bullet connectors and plastic connectors are all available aftermarket.

It is stock.  The wiring harness from each handlebar switch, the horn, and part of the main harness go in there.

I was sure it was stock, just wondered if some one had come up with a better Idea.  : )  Just seems like an odd place to install a electrical junction box when it could have been done in the headlight housing.
Will try and get some pictures posted. The bike is a 76F model but has 78F forks, rim, and the dual disc brake up front and the 78F rear rim and disc brake setup.

Cool, welcome. Good call ditching that body kit. It's unique, but sure is dated!

Yep! As others have said, it's a stock part.  I also have a '76 750SS, and mine had that junction box.  It had connections for every electrical component on the front of the bike so you could easily disconnect something w/o having to dig around in the headlight bucket.  Took mine off and unfortunately threw it out. :(  For a long time i just bundled up all those wires and zip tied them up underneath the gas tank.  Never had any problems, and it looked a lot cleaner.

...This was due to the 75/76F's having a different headlight mounting bracket & a headlight bucket that is more shallow than on the K's or the later F's. They had to put the wires somewhere...

Mine is a '76F w/ a '77k motor & switch gear, so I have this lovely bit hanging outside of that junction box. It comes from the kill switch.
If it's worth doing, it's worth doing twice.

The 400F has a black plastic bag type enclosure tucked up under the edge of the tank. If you do much work in the headlight you'll be glad all those connections are elsewhere. I wonder if a guy could connect them to a terminal strip behind or under the tank?
