I told the wife I would never buy a Super Bike - considering it

Confesions of a reformed HOON....

When I bought the CB 750 for $150 at a garage sale and decided to keep it, I told her I would not buy any kind of "Super Bike". I told her that I used to be one of those riders that EVERYONE HATED. YES, I WAS A HOON. You know the jack ass with the front tire off the ground at 50 mph in a 25mph zone winding it out like a moron. I was definitely the guy who you would have given the finger to, Or yes the guy I would have gotten off my bike and socked in the ear.  ;D While I did ride like a hoon I did always ride in full gear, not that this makes those actions any better.

To say the least my riding habits have changed intensely. Oh, I will point and squirt a little with the throttle but I never get too crazy with it. At about 75mph I'm already backing it down again.

I have longed for another super bike for awhile. Mainly a Haybusa or the new ZX-14. Both of these have linage in the bikes I cut my teeth on, which are a GSXR 7-11 and a ZX 10. With my recent interest in cafe racers a Triumph Speed Triple looks more my style. But you see there is one more thing, I want to put on lots of miles. I was looking at the new Honda ST sport touring bike. Will give me performance and styling as well as extremely long miles.

No offense Mr. HOON, but this made me laugh.  Since I believe the occasional trans-175 MPH blast has its place, and can be done in a responsible manner ( ;D), I have been reading up on the ZX-14.  There is a favorable write-up on the ZX in this month's Rider magazine.  The unusual thing is that it is written by a woman.  I think I'll wait until I see what Suzuki does with the 'Busa.  Too bad Honda doesn't want to play.

Yea I was thinking the same thing on Honda. I have the mag, getting ready to read it whne I can stop coughing, got sick today and bad - first time in almost 3 years. Making up for lost time. :'(

I guess I am looking at my needs more than my wants here. While the first two are pretty kick ass. The ST fits my need to tour. ?

Have you looked at the FJR1300?  It seems to get better reviews than the ST, and has more motor.  I haven't had a chance to ride either of them, unfortunately.

chee poh...  i'll never forget my first ride on the busa.  at 145 pounds it got me to the moon real quick.  i felt like an ewok on a speederbike!
get a used one... someone will have to help me what year in the production line this was but, the busa is a historic bike because for one year the production model topped 200mph then restrictions snuffed the fastest production bike ever made.

besides, when choosing that vs. the zx14... ick!  those stupid black fins midbike on the 14!  the busa's got the style and the speed.  kawi put out a lackadaisical response and honda forgot to show up.

and name her "suzi"

Cheapo,
Get an ST of some sort, less chance of you doing yourself any damage. I have tested a few bikes and found on the SS after a few miles my back and wrists hurt. I bought a modern Ducati ST and that is much more comfortable for doing miles on.

The Busa and ZX14 will probably tour better than you think, although they won't be a complete couch. The sporting prowess of them would blow the Honda ST's out of the water. They aren't supersport bikes, they're GT bikes. Those who have FJR's absolutely love them, from everything I've read.

I know of a 2004 Speed Triple for sale that is set up for touring duty. If I had the funds, it would be in my garage, but I don't, so it's not. The S3 is the bike I lust after more than any other.

R1's, You guys are trying to get me killed  8) Life expectancy on a R1 is pretty short for me. I know what it has to offer. I am looking to finance the bike when the manufacturers go crazy this winter on rebates and all that and try to buy last years model of what veer I get.

If you want performance with more stealth and comfort take a look at the Bandit.  Same engine as your old 7/11 and all the go-fast parts still fit.  With the money you save, work over the forks and throw on an Ohlins shock and you can surprise a bunch of superbikes.  Plus you can go farther when you're not hunched over f*(king a football.  If you're going to finance something, you gotta carry full coverage insurance.  Check the rates on a superbike vs. something like the Bandit or ZRX.  Lots of plastic = lots of $$$.

Or just hold on and be patient. The rumour mill has it that the next iteration of the VFR is going to have a V-5 motor in it.....

The Busa is a good lookin bike, especially when lowered with a 4-6'' extension in the arm.
The new R1 is a wicked looking bike as well - which has to be a blast to ride.
I would take either, as the ZX-14 is too fugly in my book...

I've owned a busa for 5 years now. Went to Mid Ohio this past July and that is 720 miles one way. I rode home in one shot in about 12 hours and that including stopping for food. Ihave a 3/4" riser plate for the bars and TL1000 footpegs to give about 3/4" of more leg room. I bought one of the Ventura pack systems and it worked great. I like the ST too. First it's a Honda. Second ...it's a Honda. I talked to several guys at Mid Ohio that owned the 1300 and they liked them very much. The only thing I don't get is it only a 5 speed  ??? but so is the FJR. I thought all FJR's were going to have the clutchless transmission too....I personally would prefer the clutch.

I hate to say it, but I find myself drooling over the new BMW K1200S..

Talk about a FAST sportbike capable of touring bigtime, and one-sided swingarm to boot!  The pricetag smacks me across the face though, and brings me back to earth every time I go to look at them!

I never thought I'd like a beemer, but this one has me looking at it a lot!

Dude, that's been a rumor, and just a rumor, for YEARS. It's not gonna happen. The '07 VFR is unchanged from 06, save for a new paint scheme.

Honda didnt want to play?...  Check out the '06 cbr1000rr

It ran a 9.89 @ 146.5 quarter mile.  Compare that to the '05 Hayabusa- 10.02 @ 143.7 and '06 BMW K1200S- 10.3 @ 137.5  -the bimmer sure does look awesome though

The '06 R1 was a bit faster with a 9.772 @ 147.8, and it is a sweet looking bike, but after riding the zx10r, cbr1000rr, and R1 I had to go with the CBR.
They all felt close enough in speed that driver skill would matter more than the bike and the Honda had the best feel by far.  Plus its a honda ;D

The big bikes (busa and zx-14) are really only faster once you get into the mid hundreds.  Think about how often you would actually go that fast and then try to justify paying so much more for a bike that uses more gas, doesnt handle as well, and has killer insurance prices.

Definitely not a touring bike though.

The VFR is a lot better for that but really lacks power compared to the other honda bikes

I havent ridden an ST but if you plan on riding lots of miles thats the first place I would look

ok jay... so they played but, it's hard for me to compare the cbr to the r1... ones a pig and one is a litre bike in 600cc desguise.  it's also hard for me to compare the cbr to the zx14 or busa... there's just too much of a displacement difference.

it'd be like me trying to compare my zx7r (its a 750) to an r1... i don't think the r1ers would appreciate that.
