Steering Stem bearing replacement for "All Balls"
« on: April 03, 2014, 12:10:35 AM »
So here it is :(

I was given a 1975 CB400F that sat for 28 years (guy got married out of High school and wife said no riding for you) and meticulously took it apart, then tagged and bagged every part except for the steering stem bearings (of course). I didn't realize the "All Balls" had Greek instruction that required sizing the stacking of the lower race's and bearings in order to figure out if the washers are required. And on top of that there is something about the stem nut that "might need a retrofit". Those ball bearings are looking mighty good right now.

Can anybody walk me through what is required to install the "All Balls" part no. 22-2011 tapered bearing set? I don't know which washer to use or whether the adjusting nut needs some type of retrofit.

I would have dismantled the wife instead.  :D
Why do women want to change the man they hope to marry?

'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

I always figured women look at their fiancés the same way men look at motorcycles in the showroom. They're perfect 'til you get them home. Buy the a new bike, now I need a new seat, different pipes, maybe change the turnsignals.......

Cablecarusa,
Links embedded below have the details.  There a two relatively long threads on here you can find by searching for "all ballz tapered steering bearings" or "tapered steering bearings" in the thread subject line.   I just did this on a 550 and it was not problem.   You will need the original shim, seal, race, balls and stack them up.   Compare to the new all balls stack height with no shim, then with thin shim, then with thick shim.   It will be obvious which you need.   For mine it was thin.   Freezer is your friend.  I will be posting my specifics later in my build thread, but tons documented already in the two threads I mentioned.

I am still not sure how to handle the nut and am seeking advice there in another thread.  Will post what I do with that once that is solved.

But you can always sell, trade or otherwise get rid of the motorcycle at a minimal loss.  Not so with a wife.   ::)

I ended up using the thick washer. Another member here tried the thin one an mangled the sealing washer pulling it back out for the thick one.
