Removing oil from gas tank?
« on: April 04, 2014, 01:48:34 AM »
I have bought a gas tank from a fellow sohc4 member last year. I've finished my bike and Im planning on using the tank. However, the PO has used oil to prevent the tank from rusting. How do I go about de-oiling/degreasing the tank so I can put gas in it?

1. Can I dump a can of seafoam, shake it around, drain it, and quickly dump gas?
2. Put a degreaser chemical, rinse with seafoam, put in gas?
3. brake cleaner, drain, seafoam, drain, gas?
4. derp stare at it and hope it goes away :(

I have bought a new tank from Yamiya750.com. The tank is oiled inside for rust protection. Very thin layer of oil. It was a paper shipped with the tank to clean tank before use.

I cannot see any problem to just fill gasoline and drive without cleaning. I had an idea to fill 0.5-1 liter gasoline, shake the tank and pour it out.

Your tank might have a thick layer of used oil?

Put some gas in it, swish it all around and dump out. If its 2 stroke oil just fill with gas and run it through.

The opposite can be a good advice before winter storing 6-7 months of no use.
Spray the tank with thin layer of oil. The fuel of today might be corrosive? Out with it and spray the entire tank.
Protect carbs with something too?

Gas should work, Seafoam would be expensive. I would give it a good rinse before using just to make sure you are starting with a nice clean slate.

I believe the PO used car oil to soak the tank for preventative maintenance

I guess fill it up with a litre of gas and dumping it will suffice? I might do this 2x just to be safe.

If you guys have more idea let me know. More knowledge is always acceptable. :D

It's not going to hurt the engine or carbs to have some very diluted oil in the gas.  A lot of oil additives are just that.
If you can drain some of the preservative oil, do.  Otherwise, just fill the tank with gas and ride it.  It will self clean.
