Paint kit from dirtbike Don....need a paint gun!
« on: April 04, 2014, 12:15:30 PM »
alright, I am going to buy a paint kit from Don.  I've heard good things about his kits.  My question is what kind of spray gun do I need?  I don't want to spend big buck on the gun if I don't have to.  Most likely the gun will only be used once in a while.  I have a 20gallon compressor just incase that matters.

I've used HVLP guns in the past with pretty good results. Like this:

I bought the big 4-gun set from Lowe's a number of years ago. The one they call the "touch-up gun" is ideal for painting these small things, IMO.
See SOHC4shop@gmail.com for info about the gadgets I make for these bikes.

Ive been using this small gun from HF for about five years.  Its painted everything from boats to the neighbors cat.  It loves thin mediums like Duracoat or spray bomb paint and has a half assed decent pattern.  Works with clear coats such as Southern Polyurethanes that are heavy even though they don't recommend it.  13 bucks, easy to clean and it has to be indestructible to survive me!  LOL

Kolbalt paint gun kit from lowes is very good and it comes with a 3yr replacement warranty. My son just painted my harley with it.

I'll try Bergen mini spray gun when I have purchased the compressor I've found. Silent one. NOT a 97dB hearing abuser as most of the other compressors out there. Not the most powerful but hopefully enough for this low pressure gun that does not need too much airflow either. Plus for my tires and blow things clean.

Ok, looks like HVLP is the way too go.  HF stuff is pretty hit or miss, some things are good other are total junk.  From what you guys posted so far seems I can get a good gun for $25-$50, which I like!

Did you find Dirtbike Don? I would REALLY like to get a Blue-Green kit from him. Mine is over 5 years old, and the label says, "Use within 3 weeks".  :P

Have you ever painted before ? Its sometimes not as easy as it looks especially with candy colors and multiple different base coats. All kinds of things like silicone "fish eyes" and "orange peel" can trip you up.  How much are those paint kits if it does not turn out ?
As for paints guns I like all my Binks I used in my furniture biz, but they are spendy.

Kit's are $150.  I've done some airbrushing, airless sprayer but not automotive paints.  The tank had gas dumped all over the top by the PO.  So I am not looking for a show stopper best in class look, just better than whats there which is bad.   Its a CJ360 so a pro paint job would cost as much as that bikes worth.  I may just opted for a solid color and clear with no candy or pearl.  That probably more the route ill go considering my experience level.

Check this one... page before the result... mini spray gun is the way for bikes. Big guns need some flow despite HVLP..
