Hey everyone. I just bought my first bike, a '78 CB750F Super Sport from a friend who had it stored in his garage for two years. I still have to put insurance on it and get it registered, but it runs great and is a lot of fun to ride around the neighborhood. It's all original, and as far as I can tell has never really had any work done to it.  The only things it needs right now are a fuel leak fixed, valves set, possibly a new timing chain, new tires, and a new drive chain. It has 15,700 miles on it. I've got a couple questions though:

Before buying this bike, I didn't know about this forum and couldn't find any examples to use as a standard for the market price on these, so I went ahead and payed him the $800 he was asking for the bike. Was this reasonable for a good, running bike?

Second, I checked the numbers for the frame and the engine, and the frame states that it is indeed an 'F' model, but the engine serial number is CB750E-3102305. From what this site says, there should be an F in there somewhere, and there isn't.  To my knowledge, this is the original engine that came with the bike...it has been in the family of the guy I bought it from since it was new. Is it possible that it's still an 'F' model engine, or is there something going on that I don't know about?

Finally, the tank shows reads "Super Sport" on it. What is the difference in this model and the standard F model? What is the difference in the F model and the standard CB750?

800, propably not too bad if the bike requires no REAL work. Probably not bad at all. You only have your avatar pic to go by so it is hard to say.

 ;D I have a feeling more than a few members may not appreciate that. I'll try to post some close up pictures later on.  It's raining right now (damn these hurricanes!) and I don't feel like pulling the tarp off. Can't put it in the garage until the gas leak is fixed.

Welcome. Most 750's wouldn't need a new timing chain for another 20.000 miles. If it's making noise, it's probably the valve tappets or the cam chain adjustment, both easy fixes. Just search the tech archive. If the fuel leak is coming from the petcock, pull it apart and soak the gasket in a small amount of fuel for a few days. They dry out if not run for a few months. Fuel lines are an easy fix as are float needles that are gummed up and sticky. Get the Clymer or factory shop manual. If the paint is good and it doesn't need to much work other than a good cleaning, $800 is probably a steal with only 15k on the odometer. Good luck and check the site often. There are always new things to learn.

Thanks for the tips.  A Clymer is definitly in the works...just got to wait 'til I've made the downpayment on insurance! I'm super-excited to start riding. Sounds like it's not gonna be nearly as hard to clean up as I thought.

Damn, I was going to ask something else, and then it completely slipped my mind when I hit the return key...

very good deal - and as cafehonda said, "a steal"

these bikes are going up and up - anything you put in this bike will only add to the value - it looks pretty close to stock, so you might want to resist the temptation to "cafe" it - or...you might not...  ;D

I've got the one on the right side (cover, that is), which is intact with the emblem, but has a large crack in it.  Still, it works fine as long as the crack is lined up, although I would like to get a new one.  The left side I do not have at all.

well you just happen to have the "expensive" one already...common fix is to fiberglass the back of it - that will keep the crack from separating, or worse, breaking altogether...

the right side is usually more expensive because...um...because it covers the oil tank??

anyways, the left side you'll be able to pick up off Erape for not too much bux - worth it to keep the electrics dry...

couldn't tell you for sure CB, haven't been watching for them, but I would guess anywhere from 11.99 to $100. depending on condition and who needs one that week.

Welcome to the forum, Lake.  I think you did OK.  All of the engine numbers are 750E, and they are never the same as the frame number.

I bought mine for 455.00.  The muffler was shot, when I removed the bracket it fell off.  The bike had a fairing which I didn't want.
I spent $275.00 for the exhaust, (found a 27 year old take off) 150.00 gathering parts to put the front end back to stock.  After that, I addressed all the other problems I found.  If those are your only issues, you did GREAT!  Where are you located that you are dealing with the hurricane?  I'm in Birmingham.

Thanks, JTB.  ;D Well, I'm in Virginia...perhaps it isn't a hurricane, I dunno. I haven't checked the weather in a while.  All I know is that it's hurricane season and it's raining, and that's what I assume it is. :P

I don't know how a prestine CB750 should sound, feel and run, and it's possible that other things are gunked up, just given that it sat for 2 years with all fluids in it.  I'm planning on changing the oil, filters, etc. but it seems to run real well for now. The throttle response is good once it's warm, no spitting or sputtering, choke works well, starts on the first kick with the choke when it's bone cold, and it idles nice and steady at 1000rpm, and the plugs are a dark shade of brown, so I'm guess all is in good working order.  Anything else I should check for without tearing things aparts to assure it's in good working order?

I think you got a good deal considering I paid $850 for mine and it looks to be in about the same shape - complete with the scuffed engine paint by the left peg. Mine wasn't running when I bought it but I had it running the night I unloaded it. Over the first couple of months I cleaned the carbs, replaced points, plug caps, etc. Had to clean the front calipers, replace the ignition switch, and replace the fork seals too. If you have any kind of mechanical ability, you won't have too much trouble fixing things. They're really easy to work on.
