CB350F - one more exhaust gasket question
« on: April 18, 2014, 09:33:19 AM »
So I was replacing a couple of exhaust studs and I figured I'd remove the old exhaust gaskets in anticipation for the new ones that I had ordered for my new exhaust system. However, I can't honestly tell if there are actually old gaskets in the exhaust ports. The consensus I've read thus far seems to indicate that, despite what I think or what it looks like, they're in there. And they can be difficult to remove.

I've included a couple of photos to see if I could get a consensus on this. I had initially assumed that where the "lip" is in the port was the inner edge of the gasket and I somewhat gingerly attempted to pull it out with a flat-head and a hook. However, having never done this I was a bit concerned I might just be chipping away at the inside of the port, itself. The exhaust had definitely been removed at some point (probably on multiple occasions) by the PO and who knows who else. It's certainly possible they didn't bother to replace the gaskets or even reinstall the old ones.

At this point, the new gaskets have arrived. Just wanted to get an experienced eye on that before I proceed.
Thanks.

Yes those have exhaust gaskets in them, I'm certain. That lip on the inside of the port is the gasket, I've used a flathead screwdriver before to pry them out. They should pop out pretty easily.

Agreed. There ARE gaskets in there.

Yes, there are plated copper or aluminum crush gaskets that kinda blend in and almost look like they are part of the aluminum head. I was going to replace mine as well but they looked to be in OK shape. For a bike that is almost 40 years old the headers don't leak!  I say that unless you have a leak do not mess with it. Not worth the headache getting them out.

I use a large cotter pin pick and they come out easy. I you have a dremel tool use a cup wire brush once they are clean they show up real good. Once I get mine out I use that brush and go all around where the gasket was to clean up the head.

I've had a lot of trouble prying them out before and had to hammer a screw driver under them to pry them up and out. Good luck!
