good question Ernie.  I think its a UK term, but where the 100 comes from I don't know. Imperial ton is 2240 lbs or 1,016 kg, U.S. ton is 2000lbs. ??? ???

OK you lot ;D...it's an English word for 100, and thats the end of that. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Now if you read the article that cbj posted, you will be gobsmacked to know that we have a similar club over here and girls go faster than that jurno.
Our fastest is a dutchman by the name of Frank, who ran 265mph a few month ago.
Vincent Hill was one of the first people to come onto our forum to congratulate him.
You can find it all here.  www.200mph.org.uk

Wikipedia has a bit of information about the Cafe culture that spawned the term:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ton-up_Boys

If you've seen Quadrophenia, Rockers (members of Cafe culture) were the enemy.

Plus, the Wikipedia entry has some most excellent links, including a link to Carpy's home page:

if not then you have as much chance of hearing AA speak "ebonics" as a white person...
