Hello,im ayjay and just joined, need 400-4 advise
« on: April 26, 2014, 01:04:02 PM »
Hi I have just purchased a 76 400/4 and the engine baffles me a bit, if I rev it to 2500 it seems fine although might be a bit lumpy, but as soon as it reaches 2500 it revs to 4500 without any more use of the throttle, what causes this?
I have cleaned carbs and balanced them, I have no air leaks, please advise what I need to do to sort this thanks
regards AJ

Try syncing your carbs. The carbs need to be clean clean and not just rinsed out.

You won't get any useful advice until we know the setup for your bike.  For example:

Stock exhaust?
Aftermarket exhaust?  If so what kind? Baffle/no baffle?
Pod filters?  What kind?
Jetting for the bike?  Mains, slow?
Air screw out how many turns?
Needle clip position?

Start with that and we can get back to you.  Also "cleaning" the carbs means something different to every single person, so please provide details.

Do the full 3000 mile tuneup. It will clear up a lot of stuff, you will know the condition of the bike then too.

It could be sync, spotty ignition like old plug caps, dirty carbs, who knows really.

Welcome, put up some pics. I have two of these 400f's I'm starting to tear in to
The dirty girl-1976 cb750k, Ebay 836, Tracy bodykit
Round top carbs w/ 38 pilots, middle needle position, airscrew 7/8ths out, 122 main jet
Stock airbox w/ drop in K&N, Hooker 4-1

Don't trust me alone with a claw hammer and some pliers
