Hondamatic 750A rebuild - oil filter removal
« on: June 04, 2014, 06:51:44 AM »
Anyone got any advice on removing the oil filter bolt/cover.  I have a '76 and a '77.  Tried getting the bolt off the '76 and it was chewed up to begin with.  Vice grips chewed it up worse.  Then cut a slot across it to get a big screwdriver in it and used a wrench on the screwdriver shaft to help turn but still bent up the slot I cut in the bolt.  So I decided to try the '77 (bolt head was in good shape).  Same problem.  Any tips?  I will have to grind off the bolt on the '76 (no saving that one)  Also any tips on getting an engine running that has sat for years.  I got a '77 engine that cant have more than a few thousand on it.  Still has the original frame pieces mounted to it and headers ( they just cut the engine outa the frame).  Havent checked it but was told first cylinder tested about 170 and the other three 180 compression.  You can tell it was not run much.

Any steps I should take before trying to bring her back to life?  Lubing Etc.  Carbs will be rebuilt.  Electronic Ignition will be installed.  Not tearing it apart,  but was wondering if maybe I should run penetrating fluid through it for a few days.  More afraid of the oils pump etc getting gunked up.  I will put a few drops in each cylinder before even cranking her.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I would try to find socket close enough in size (12point) and hammer it on the bolt, it saved my a$$ on some projects before.

You could take a sawzall to it and if needed cut the bolt with the housing too - oil filter housings are cheap and plentiful.

I have politely smacked the bolt to shock it loose and when ever possible use a 6 point socket or wrench . The head is made small deliberately to hopefully keep people from over torquing it and puling the stub off the block when installing . I have seen two of those. Tragic and needed new cases. It only needs to be snug. Once I was able to get a pipe wrench on the filter canister and rock it back a tiny bit and forth to the little stops while trying to remove the bolt..
A little lube in the cylinders and plugs removed, roll the crank by hand a few times. and then roll it on the starter until the oil light goes out for a few seconds and fire it up with fresh plugs.

Thanks for the help.  Ended up gingerly Grinding the top of the bolt and didn't damage  the housing.  Strange thing is that the bolt was not over tightened.  The bolt head/flange is what was frozen.  Once that was ground off the bolt unscrewed by hand.  On my other bike Im gonna try some penetration oil and a torch to loosen it up.  I also did notice some Blue Hawk socket heads made to dig into bolt heads that have been stripped.
