74 CB550. Wiring issue (mod)
« on: June 14, 2014, 10:15:53 PM »
Hey guys,
Im having trouble wiring up a cbr250RA right controls with my stock controls.

The problem i'm having is having the electric start to work. My issue here is that I think the problem is me not having the brown/white wire that's suppose to go to the ignition.

Heres how i have it.

CBr250 RA
Engine stop and starter switch from left to right
Black/Blue
Black/Green

Black/Blue (connected with the first Black/Blue inside(?))
Yellow/Red

I connected
Black/Blue to Black/White of CB550
Black/Green to Green/Red of CB550
Yellow/Red to Yellow/Red of CB550

This set up
- Can crank but not start via electric start
- Kick start can't start the bike

I connected
Black/Blue to Black/White of CB550
Black/Green to Black(12v) of CB550
Yellow/Red to Yellow/Red of CB550

This set up
- Cannot crank via electric start
- Kick start starts the bike.

Here's the wiring diagram

Apologies, but the 250 diagram is unreadable as you posted it.

The Grn/Red from 550 connects it's way to Clutch Safety switch on 550. Does the 250 route this way too? Obviously, the 250 hand control is not switching out of "Off" position. But without being able to read that diagram, I can't help-

I will say this, colors change between models. If you have made the connections from the 250 based upon "similar" colors to the 550, I would not be confident in that choice. I know you swapped them around to test different scenarios, but without putting a multimeter on the 250 switch and determining which wire functions in what capacity, you're guessing.

If you can re-post the diagram, might be easier to help-

Thats actually the only source i have for the RA model. I know its terrible quality but the colour is the last thing im worry about. Its actually the layout of the controls im having issues with. Im aware not to match colours. The only wires that i have stated for the RA are actually the only colours/wires thats important (kill switch and electric start). i noticed for the 550 that theres a dedicated 12v for the kill switch which feeds to the ignition and starter (black/white). The RA doesnt have this because the dedicated 12v and the green/red wire are connected together (black/blue). It seems that the only way is to open the circuit between the kill switch and the electric start and solder a green/red wire for the electric start for the ssm.

I have successfully mounted a gsxr 600 left control with the "passing and hazard" button without issues. I knew which ones to use. All i had to do was not solder the other 2 wires that feeds power to the dual filament signals.

I hope
Someone can chime in.

My idea is to cut the black/blue thats connecting the kill switch and starter button together. Ill then connect the black blue to power (12v). I will solder in a green/red to the other end of the black/blue and connect that to the green/red wire for the ssm.

Any thoughts?

I have figured out the issue as to why it wasn't working. Thanks Cal for the input!

What was the solution?

I cur the wire that connects the kill switch and the starter button. The one that goes to the kill switch is now a 12v. The one that goes to the starter is a green/red wire that goes with the clutch wire.

So is it now a "switched 12v" or a direct 12v?

So is it now a "switched 12v" or a direct 12v?

The kill switch has 2 wires. A black and white wire that turns the ignition over and a 12v that powers it up. The 12v is directly connected to the killswitch.

I hope that makes sense
