400F Guru in the Southeast?
« on: June 30, 2014, 07:32:34 am »
We're having a HELLUVA time getting the 400F right in my GF's bike.

Two rebuilds, buckets of money,  and it's still smoking like crazy and using oil. Is there ANYONE in the Southeast, driving distance from Charlotte, NC metro area, that can really handle a once-and-for-all 400F top end rebuild?
We're in too deep to quit at this point.

Id bet dollars to donuts that Bill Benton can handle it. He's in Georgia and thats awfully close to Rock Hill, all things considered.

Hope you find someone to do it- shouldn't be hard to get a 400f not smoking- cast pistons (OE Honda), .001" to .0015" clearance, including professional honing by someone who knows what they are doing, check and replace valve guides as necessary, new rings and seals.

There is no oil consumption between 1500 mile changes on my commuter 400, after about 20k miles (surprises me a bit to be honest).

Now, if you were asking about stopping head gaskets weeping after they've done 15k miles, that's a different question...

Oh no Mr Bill!  :D Well if I knew how to find my buddy Kaz, we'd be in business. Got your email, just been busy regular work and trying to put things together to go back to Va to see Sam. I'd be glad to help Scott. It ain't that hard, wonder what they missed? Time will tell. I know who bores and hones straight and who can do valve job, (Serdi). As someone stated, tight clearances on OEM pistons, 0015-18, just a little less than .002. Proper bore and hone, new rings and gaskets, new guide seals and guides if ness. Wow, sounded like it was all good last we talked.
Just finished my buddy's K0 yesterday, it's heading home. Scott first thing to do is disassemble, check, measure and go from there. Those who mentioned me, mucho gracias, Bill

Scott, if I were you I wouldn't sell that 466 piston kit just yet. ;)
EDIT: just saw you had already come to the same conclusion. :-[

Bill, we're awaiting word from the last shop that worked on it, but I'm willing to pull the engine and bring it down if that's how it works out.
We're just ready to be DONE with this.
