Topic: CB400f clutch noise.

When I am starting off from a dead stop, the clutch makes a high pitched whining noise. Also, depending on the throttle position when cruising, it makes the whining noise. Under engine braking and hard acceleration, it doesn't make the noise.

I put in new friction discs because it was slipping a little bit, but it still makes the noise.

The bike runs fine otherwise.

Does it quiet down when squeeze the lever at idle?

How many miles are on it? My transmission had a very noticeable whine with 35k on on it.  I replaced my complete transmission with a used unit with 8500 miles. It's much better now but it still does it. Oh and I replaced the clutch and kept the same basket so now it just clunks around like a wet Ducati. Lol. I think your hearing the trans and primary chain and not the clutch. If you clutch was bad it just slip.

It doesn't make any noise until you start to slip the clutch to get moving. I could be not moving at all, just letting the clutch out and when it starts to grab, it makes the noise.

Ya that's mostly the primary chain links that are stretched out. You wouldn't think a chain should make that kind of a noise but they do when there worn out. It'll still go a loooong time but it will also make the noise your hearing. Don't worry about it they all do it. Ride it and enjoy the sounds of times past.

I only replaced mine because I had the engine cases split fixing the cam chain tensioner.

^ Thanks. I guess it needs to be under load to make the noise because free reving it in neutral or 1st gear with the clutch in it's silent.
