CB550 Front Disc Bolt Pattern? Interchangable Modern Discs?
« on: August 16, 2014, 05:48:43 PM »
I know this topic has been covered, but I can find the info im looking for through the search option...so here it goes.

Tired of dealing with sh*tty braking. On my xs650 I was very easily able to upgrade the performance by using a more modern rotor and and Brembo Caliper from a Ducati monster. Great braking. easy to do. people sell kits for this. all together awesome.

Before you tell me to swap the front end...let me say I have the suspension set up to my liking. not looking for a modern fork. just modern brakes.

1. Is anyone making similar kits for cb550's/cb750's? adaptor plates and such?

2. does anyone know what modern bikes have discs that use the same bolt pattern at the cb550 (or what the bolt pattern is)?

Thanks for the help!

More info: I have already replaced the lines with stainless, and upgraded master cylinder. still think the stock brakes suck.

Have you considered duel discs on the front?  Scott is selling rotors and has them listed in the for sale section.

turboguzzi made brackets for CB500 forklegs to use small Brembo F05's. The discs are Suzuki I suggested he use because they're much lighter but otherwise the same offset & diameter as the 500/550's

http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=44616.0;attach=64809

I use the same calipers on mine but since I use 750F2 forks the caliper brackets are simpler. These calipers are twin pistons and a good choice for a middleweight offering vastly improved braking. Mine are modified Honda rotors.

Just a couple ideas for you. I have thought of using a larger 750 rotor with the larger Brembo F08 caliper, but this setup works so well I hate to change!

thanks for the responces guys! I dont post a lot on the forum, because I usually can find what I am looking for in the search, and I dont really have much Knowladge to add to most discusions. When ever I do post, everyone is always very helpful. cheers to that.

calj737, didn't mean to offend. I know these breaks were the tits at the time these bikes came out. Just been spoiled by modern brake tech...You are correct about people making adapters etc, what I am interested in is finding what specific rotors will work with our hubs bolt pattern (understanding a spacer will be needed to get the offset correct). Making a spacer and caliper  bracket is all doable. I know on the xs650 forums there are lists/spreadsheets/diagrams etc. that outline parts the bolt right onto the bike. Figure someone might have made the same sort of thing for our Honda CBs. maybe not. Those XS guys have too much time on their hands.

bwaller, turbo guzzi always has the coolest tech...still trying to fab up a hydraulic clutch actuator like he has on his CB500f. your brakes look great too. my thought is that there are so many of those Brembo Gold calipers out there for so cheap (ducati has made a lot of monsters), that i would like to go that route with the caliper. they might not look period correct, but they stop on a dime, and it's easy to get parts a rebuild kits for them. Seems like some enterprising young machinist could get quite a bit of interest if they make a nice bolt on spacer kit for the Brembo Golds (pandemonium cycles did this for xs650s, and now you hardly see on without the brake upgrade).

Ill keep updating this page to show what i come up with. might just buy Scott's twin disc setup for the short term, and then try to sort an upgrade during the chilly shed months.

You're right about using something more modern, I should have mentioned TG & I both needed to use the older style Brembo calipers to be "period correct" for our vintage race classes.

Good luck.

An FZR 600 disk has the same bolt pattern but different offset. You would have to have a spacer made and get longer bolts to make it work.

I forgot to mention that you will have to make a carrier like bwaller and turboguzzi did. The disk is a bit wider in diameter so the stock brake position will need to be modified.
I'll also mention that I checked clearance using my FZR caliper and it interferes with the spokes. FunJimmy took some CBR calipers and trimmed the caliper to fit on his brake setup.

BTW is your name the K6-2 500 or an APU?
