Dyna S Electronic Ignition
« on: September 28, 2006, 02:06:58 PM »
Everyone, do youselves a favor.

Rip your points plate out, throw it as far as you can, and install a Dyna.

In the time it would take me to adjust the timing and gap using points, I installed a Dyna.

I wish I would have done this from day one.

Mine's on the way...

all it took was losing my points file, so i figured to hell with it and took the dive.  i ride year round, so i'll be money ahead this time next year anyway.  I'm actually replacing my entire ignition system- coils, plugs, wires, and boots.  looking forward to it.

I had a dyna ignition installed early this summer. I just returned from a trip to Florida 3530 miles my 78 750K ran with no problems. Working on my next excursion...M

I ad a `75 with points and my current `73 has a Martek (?I think). I know it`s 2 completely different bikes but this one starts MUCH easier than the 75. What part of the Island are ya from liaudio?

Can I just swap in the Dyna S ignition with everything else stock in my CB550, and have at least the same or better performance/longevity?  I'm willing to swap if so.  If it means I have to put in different coils, etc., then I'm just gonna stick with points.

Hey Putnaja1 -

Once installed it looks completely stock from the outside, and uses all stock ignition components.
No need to upgrade coils
Installs in minutes, really!

Considering that seller's #$%*ty feedback, I'd gladly fork over the extra 20 bucks for a brand new unit.

Me to - what do you guys think - should I buy a new Dyna, or pull the Martek 440 out of the 750F I bought and put it into the 550?  Any advantage of Dyna vs. Martek?  The Martek is original from 1975 with 18K miles.

That seems awfully harsh. The negative feedback he's received seems to have come from people he's bought from, not people who have bought stuff from him. Did you sell him something?

Not harsh at all.  Anything below 98% with that many total feedback is not a good rating.  Doesn't matter whether they were from buyers or sellers, a pain in the ass is a pain in the ass.

The Martek and Dyna are pretty similar functionally. Side by side the Martek looks either substantial or big and old while the Dyna looks either flimsy or modern and high-tech, depending on your mood.
The Martek uses infrared LEDs and a sensor to trigger the ignition. Dyna uses a magnet and Hall effect sensors.
The Martek will be pretty old and electronic parts, particularly the LEDs, don't last forever. But it has proven its durability and dependability.
The Dyna will be brand new with new parts. But electronic things usually fail early, and you'll be doing the break-in.
Either way you'll probably worry about it for a while and then forget it's there, and forget about adjusting timing.
Either one is good for stock coils. I wouldn't use 3 ohm coils with the Martek, the Dyna is OK with them.

I sure as hell don't want to defend some guy I don't know from Adam, but 500-plus positives doesn't seem bad to me. You're obviously more knowledgeable than I am about what it takes to be a pain in the ass, so I'll defer to you!

A big plus with the Dyna nobody has mentioned is the fact that they aren't supposed to be affected by moisture. Theoretically the should work under water, but I don't think I'd try that.

I had one in an old Shovelhead years ago, worked great. I'll probably put one in the 350f this winter.

I remember having a Dyna on my 76 750f when I bought it and it also had a little solid state black box installed near the coils.  The one I just installed didn't come with that.

Is the Dyna S just a current version than that?  Newer technology doesn't require that black box?

Might have been a more sophisticated model of Dyna EI that allowed finer tuning of the advance.

Why keep posting links for Dyna ignitions that cost more than what Z1 is selling them for?

Sorry, just realized that last ebay Dyna has a Buy It Now for $135 with a starting bid of $99, but I'd be surprised if it sold for much less than the buy it now price, if not more.
