dohc swap question please!
« on: September 10, 2014, 02:09:29 PM »
Hey guys I got my 1982 dohc swingarm. I have a 77 cb750k. I know I need to shorten the pivot width by 1/2. I know it's all on one side as well. My question is does the 1/2 come off the sprocket side or the oil tank side. I'm pretty sure it's the oil tank side. I just need to double check before cutting thanks!!

Could you measure it?

The sprocket has to line up, thats the bottom line.

I think Lucky done this.

I did something similar on my 1976 CB750F. I put on a CB900F DOHC swing arm disk brake and shocks. A couple things need to be in align. The sprockets and the front and rear wheel. On mine I ended up cutting both sides of the swingarm and putting on a sprocket from cycle X with a 10 mm offset.

I would make sure that you have the wheels in hand that you are going to use so you can center things properly. The wheels I used were off a 1983 CB1100F, they were an alloy wheel so no re-centering of the hub and rim with a re-lace of the wheel. Additionally you may want your tire choice mounted as well for clearance purposes.

If the wheels are not in align the handling of the bike will go in the toilet. If the front and rear sprockets are not align other bad things will happen.

This has been done a few times on here. I know my specs are right. Just no ones right up is clear on the side to cut it off of. They say right side. Which I assume is the oil tank side but I learned a while ago what assuming does.....or they say the lop-sided side which I do not understand...

Interesting, how did it go?  Did you have to alternate the fork too?

seat cover man, it has been a couple years since I did this but things that I know for sure that I did. First I did put on a different front end, wheel and brakes, 1981 CB900F front end and brakes and 1983 CB1100F wheel.

I have over 1500 miles on the bike since I completed it in May 2014 and this bike rocks. I have several bikes and as far as overall ride handling and ridability I love it. I will say that it sits a bit low and I do have a tendency to scrap foot pegs but at high speeds 100+ it is amazing for stability.  Here is a link for what this build looks like completed.

You could also use one off a late model 650 like I did. They are the exact width...no cutting needed. The rod is considerably thicker though so it would require widening the holes on the frame.
