Synching carbs after engine rebuild
« on: September 16, 2014, 05:46:44 AM »
As the title would suggest, I've completed my top end rebuild. New piston rings and a valve job basically.
Everything else has been adjusted and set. (Valve clearance, cam chain tension, ignition timing, plugs gapped)
Now it's time to synch the carbs, it's been a few years and over 5,000 miles since the last synch.

I've only started it and set the timing, and let the engine get warm. No real road test yet to break it in/seat the rings.

Here's the question:
Should I wait to synch the carbs until after a few hundred miles of break-in riding? Or am I good by doing it now, and then putting some miles on it?

My plan for the K3F is to synchronize right after timing and before taking it to the road and check again after few hundred miles.

It is just one more variable I am able to eliminate right away.  Even with the synchro just being in the same ball park will help with the break in.

If it is running pretty good, a bench synch is close, then I would run it for awhile to break the new rings into the bore. I would not want to do a lot of idling , running hot etc. on a fresh top end right out of the box. A load on the rings as in riding and varying your rpm's make for a good break in.

I was thinking if I start it with vacuum gauges already connected, I could get it line up pretty quick.

But now I might change my plan :)

Bench sync or just leave them. More important to break it in than worry about a ratty idle.
