CB750K2 oil pressure light stays on
« on: October 06, 2014, 06:45:45 PM »
I just did my first oil change on this bike and did the filter as well.  I used Castrol motorcycle oil and a Wix 24940 filter.  I was surprised how much was in the oil pan and spilled a lot of it was well, since my oil catch pan didn't get quite close enough.  I put three liters in and the oil shows halfway up the textured portion of the dipstick.

I started it up and ran it, with the oil pressure light going out not long after.  After I stopped the bike the oil pressure light stays on for about two seconds and then goes out.  Is this normal, or at least problematic?  It always seemed to go out right away before I did the oil and filter.

Also the oil tank drain plug had the remnants of a very thin metal washer/gasket on it.  It was all but destroyed so I omitted it and I need to ride to work tomorrow morning.  Is it a special washer?  Available through the normal suppliers?

The only thing you need to worry about, is that the light is out when the engine is running...there is no need for oil pressure when the engine isn't spinning. :)  The washer is a crush washer and is needed for the drain plug to seal properly, and technically should be replaced with every oil change.  I re-use them all the time because I am too disorganized to stock up on replacements.  It should be ok to ride a little without the washer, but it is gonna leak, how much?, I don't know.   You could try making a washer out of cardboard and coating it with gasket sealant if you get in a pinch.
If it works good, it looks good...

Both drain plugs--oil tank and oil pan, take the same washer: Honda WASHER, DRAIN (12MM), part #94109-12000, with a price tag of around 50 Cents. Interests rates are low, so you might be able to finance the purchase. Did you put enough oil in? I usually hit the start button with the kill switch on, then check oil in oil  tank again. In any case, after running the engine for a moment, shut it off, let it sit for a minute, then check oil level in tank again. Most likely, the oil level in the oil tank has dropped by now.  I don't know about your filter, never understood why people would use anything but the Honda filter. But then, I read a lot of things in this forum that make me scratch my head.

The local Honda dealer isn't known for the service they give, especially with parts so I went to an independent shop and they carried Wix; the internet seems to think they're a fine filter.  I will get genuine Honda ones, once I settle on a good online parts shop, suggestions welcome.  The oil level reads as full after a ten minute ride and still is this morning.
