Back to the program, next up is this Triumph TR6.   My brother wanted a Triumph (Bonneville) but never bought one, and I've never ridden one. Am I missing anything?

That links not working for me Steve :(
I've had Triumph Bonnevilles (a T120 and a T140ES), a Daytona and my current old twin, the Norton. Gotta say the Norton wins on all fronts, particularly handling. Early Triumph frames weren't the best.
Triumph lovers feel free to shoot me down! ;D

Link worked for me.  Thanks for your comments, maybe I should put a Norton on the bucket list?

Um, oil leaks and "Prince of darkness" electrical system come to mind. ;)

I do hate oil leaks and if I had a triumph, it would have to have an updated elec system.

Link is working for me now Steve, good write-up.

It's a bit of a fallacy that all old Brit bikes leak oil. Admittedly they did all seem to back in the day, but people forget they had a primary purpose as a get-to-work commuter workhorse, and were quite often a family's only mode of transport. I don't suppose anyone expected them to be future 'classics' back then. Not everyone was maintenance-savvy, and a lot were neglected. Vertical split cases were asking for trouble from the start ::)

Nowadays with modern materials and sealants you can get your old twin oiltight (which is more than I can say for some CBs I've owned!). Electricals are easily upgraded too.

Actually most did, the alloy used in the crank cases was porous and the machining tolerances weren't all that accurate...  ;)

I recently went to a swap meet and where the bikes were parked there were about 6 or 7  early triumphs, nortons etc parked next to each other and they all leaked oil to some degree.  My 72 bonneville leaked when i got it but a couple of gaskets and its fairly oil tight. Sometimes after a short ride a drop may appear in a day or so , but not everytime. a bit weird that.   as usual a photo.  ken
