I would normally agree with you, Raul. But I had just bought a house and was getting married at the time, so money was really tight. I usually try to find new (or new condition) parts wherever I can and compared to most of the OEM pipes sets you see on eBay, these were much better that what you usually find. But, seeing as how I got the bike for $800, I felt paying that much for pipes was outrageous. However, if these pipes go, I will probably end up getting a new set.

I can understand if I'm short of money I try to save some, but if the bike costed only 800$ means nothing. Ink cartridges are generally as expensive as the whole printer. You have to buy what you have to buy.

Well, I think now it's clear that I also ride my bike for the looks...

It's about a year since I was a member of this forum.
My old CB500 was leaking oil from the cylinder block/head again the chain and sprockets needed replacing and a host of other things needed doing which I didn't do during the budget repairs I did to get it on the road years ago.

So I went and got a SV650, just didn't fancy a long rebuild and being without a bike.
Plus I wanted to try a modern machine before I get too old.

Everything the road tests say about this bike are true, it can be stuffed into corners, plenty of grip with modern rubber and loads of grunt from the V twin to make a quick exit.
And you leave all of the beemers/skoobies behind at the lights, being careful of the right hand or the front wheel will be pointing at the sky.

Sometimes fill guilty riding the new bike when I've had the CB for so long, it's just sitting in the shed neglected.

My CB500 was to be shipped to Ireland to relations over there but the shipping costs proved to be to much so I've still got the bike.
Perhaps it's fate that I should not part with it.

But I think owning a Honda classic is not about sheer performance, I did 20k plus miles around the country lanes of 'England's green and pleasant land' and can't recall a single bad ride.

If your style of riding is more laid back and you want a bike that looks good with more performance than a cruiser then all you need is a Honda SOHC.

A mild café racer style like Harry Teicher's bike for example, very nice!! :)

I ride for the fun of it now. No longer needing speed, I bought a few (ok 9 cb750's, mostly junkers) and have 2 running now. They are slow but dependable. They don't brake as well as the V-Max, GSX1100G or GSX750r but I have yet to get a speeding ticket on one! ha ha. Actually, I love how it looks compared to all the new stuff out there.

Hi 50words,

It sounds like you're ready for a VFR750 or 800. Can be fun track bikes, wonderfully smooth V4 motor and great for canyon carving or long touring. '93-'97 carb'ed or '98-'01 FI, take your pick. I've ridden my '99 over 40K in the last 4 years and still love it. I'd say the VFR is the 90's equivalent of the CB750.

But I'm still working on my '78 F bike project and don't think you can go wrong with the CB750. Enjoy,

Mike

my dad wanted a cb750 but he thought he could not afford it .  He could not bring himself to spend money on himself. My 550 is all the sport bike I need but I would like one of those big Honda or Kawi cruisers but not a gold wing.

Right after I got my current job, I was making enough money to start buying some toys. So I went to a local dealer, attracted by an old Kawasaki for $1400. I can't remember what it was. A 1980 Honda CB650 was sitting right beside it. I liked the way the Honda looked better, plus it was cheaper, only $1,100. I asked if they offered any military discounts (helps that I was in my uniform) and he said he'd give it to me for $1,000 plus throw in a helmet.
And that's how I came to love this bike.
I'd really like to have a Honda ST1100 or ST1300, but I just can't afford it.

Because I bought a 1969 Candy Rubytone Red CB750 brand new in July of 1969, destroyed it in August 1969 and want it back, along with my youth. Besides, it's the best bike of all time, isn't it? Cliff.

wow! this thread is old. several guys in here that seem to have drifted away.

Yep.  A lot of the real old-timers from the Greenspun days that just disappeared.  Raul pokes his head in occasionally, but Harry has been gone for years, and Quail almost as long.  It would be nice to have those guys back on a regular basis.

It's nice to see a thread like this, that's this old, get brought back up to the surface. :)

As for me, it depends on the day, the mood, the distance, and the destination.  Some mornings it's habit.  I get up, get ready for work and go through the riding gear and start-up ritual.  On those days it's for utility.  It will always start and will always get me to work.  Some days I just need to run some errands and could just as easily take the car, but the bikes need to be ridden to stay in good shape, so I ride one of them.  Most days I really just need to ride for no reason, but most days life, responsibilities and obligations keep that from happening.  On the days it can happen, I ride because it's the only thing I'm thinking about while I'm doing it.  It's therapy.  It pushes the rest of my thoughts to the subconscious where they manage to work themselves out.

And on the very, very rare days, I get to ride a few hundred miles to meet up with other sohc4 members who I ride through the hill country with, and camp next to a lake, trade stories, trade laughs, and ride some more together the next day, and then ride a few hundred more miles home.

I'm really not trying to sound sentimental here, but that's why I ride my sohc4.

Speed nah
Style....in spades mate! ;D
Soul....yeah my 79 has soul and some heart too, you can't help smiling when you're on a SOHC4 and the world is going by you, it's just so good for your soul. :)
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

I didn't realize this was a zombie thread 'till about half way through, but it's well worth resurrecting.
I got mine because I couldn't spend a lot of money and the price was right. I didn't want a V twin cruiser or a sport bike. To me a UJM looks like motorcycle should look, so I guess it's style.
Also I like the fact that it's a 77 which is the year I graduated high school.

One of the most distinct things about riding a motorcycle is nothing is like a motorcycle. You are at one with
a two wheeled machine, exposed to the elements and is one of the most purest ways to get from A to
B  and dealing with the risk's envolved that heighten that experience.  The rush i get every time i
start my turbo bike still gives me chills, strapping on my helmet like i'm some professional racer, riding
out on the road passing cars with heads turning, looking trying to figure out what it is thats between
my legs making that turbocharger noise, wishing they had the balls to ride a motorcyle.
The adrenalin rush i get when the boost comes on and holding on to that fairingless motorcycle
is almost undescribable.  Thats why i ride my Honda.   ;)

Timeless design, styling, and function. A classic that does everything well. We all owe Mr. Honda and Mr. Hansen (among others) a debt of grattitude.
They hit it out of the park. 8) So I guess my answer is all of the above.

It's the bike I always wanted and gave up when I felt the need. Too bad I didn't have a storage spot for it.  And what Magpie said.
Someday soon i'll get started on the day 2 resto of my K0. I like my F1 but there's something about a K0 thats just sexy. Best part is it lacks the original engine so who cares that I popped an 836 in there? Hoping to find a nice Jardine header for it but a yoshi repop will do nicely.
Oh yeah, I got both my bikes for about 2 or 3 payments of what a new bike costs.

This is my "something else"
We have a lot in common:
We both came into this world in the spring of '73
We were both broken in and found our true calling on the highways and back roads of Canada.
We like to hang out in the garage on the weekends.
Both of us need to warm up a bit on a cold morning.
The more time we spend together the more we understand each other.
Together we will teach my sons valuable lessons about caring for something other than yourself.
We will grow up, but will never age.
If ever there was a creator of bastard sons, it is the open road, for she has claimed so many young men yearning for freedom......

Speed?  Yanno, she is fast enough for anything I need and does it well!

Style?  Yeppers, it is hard to beat!

Soul?  I'll be your Doug!

Something else?  Of course there are many but I LOVE how easy these are to work on!  Carbs out, cleaned and back in at about three hours = HEAVEN!
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.
