1977 CB550F Final Drive Flange Removal
« on: November 14, 2014, 02:58:40 PM »
Hi Guys,

Just wondering - is the 550's Final Drive Flange a "Press Fit"?  Should I be able to pry it out using the rear sprocket?

I have the bearings, spacers and retainers all out already.

Thanks!

So,

Looking at the rear hub, I see what looks like stake marks on the outside of the piece where the bearing retainer screws in.  Do I need to drill those out and back out that middle piece?  The schematics don't show that, and I am getting confused.

Thanks,

with the retaining ring out removed like you have it should just come out, they can be stubborn if they haven't been apart for a few years.

Dave,

I was hoping you would chime in!

Its pretty stubborn - a complete bike, which i got running well before tearing into it.

What should I be doing to get the hub apart?  I want to PC everything for the rebuild.  The rubbers are definitely in good shape...

Just cannot get the flange apart.

Thanks Bro!

try wd40/crc/pb blaster between its hub, probably rusty in there, try carefully knocking through the holes on the other side in the brake drum side, not too hard, from side to side it might wiggle out.

Thanks Dave!
I will get something with a blunt head and some good penetrant and heat and get this bad boy apart.

It feels REALLY GOOD to get back at this bike!

Hi Guys,

Got it apart.  Just what Dr. Dave prescribed.  Although pretty clean inside a healthy dose of Deep Creep, Map Gas and a Hammer and Brass drift on the rubbers and she slowly released.

Now I can clean up the hub, PC it and polish the flange, although after cleaning it up, that might not even be necessary as the caked on decades of lube protected the hell out of the factory "bright" finish.

So to recap - a 1/4" bit is required to drill out the stakes on the bearing retainer.  It seems huge, but whn you look at the "access ports" on the face of the retainer, it makes sense.  I just did each one a little bit, applied heat and penetrant, and carefully knocked the retainer CLOCKWISE to see if it would release and move.  I repeated until it did.  I was able to remove the retainer with no damage to its, or the flange's fine threads.  I am able to screw the retainer in smoothly for the rebuild.

As always, thank you for help and wise advice.

I never restake them either, because of the wheel vs the thread direction youd be unlucky if one came loose.

Dr. Dave,

Thanks, that was going to be a question later on.

I think some blue threadlock to be safe, as I will be seling this bike when its done.

Thanks!
