Battery Tray
« on: December 09, 2014, 10:42:22 AM »
Does anyone know who sells battery trays similar to this that will fit a cb400f. I know I could make one but I'm not great at welding yet so I'd rather just buy one.

Thanks!

I don't know a source, I have only seen guys make one-off's for their projects. Most guys who cant weld use rivets to attach stuff.

To make it easier to shape the metal and not need welding you can leave open corners. Corners that aren't welded together can have a longer flap in order to shape the box flap over the side rails. As long as the battery is strapped down you won't get significant forces that would distort the tray in that case.

That's pretty much what I just did last week. Made a box out of 16 gauge steel from an auto parts store. Cut it out with an angle grinder and to make it easier to bend the sides I "scored" the fold line with the angle grinder as well. I don't plan on welding up the sides.

Calj737 thankfully recommended I use threadserts. Also called rivnuts or nutserts. You drill a hole (apparently anything 1/4" or smaller is ok to drill into the frame) put one of these in there and then you can thread a bolt or screw into it. Worked very well. These are the actual ones I bought.

And I like watching this guy struggle while showing how to install them.

Thanks guys! That video was awesome! I couldn't help but laugh. : )

I didn't think about asking Devin to make one for me...I will shoot him an email and ask. I am currently sketching some ideas for the tray that I might make myself or have it fabricated for me locally. Thanks for the help so far!
