what clicking sound means what.
« on: December 10, 2014, 08:49:30 PM »
So I have read that certain click/tick/clunking sounds mean different things.

What noise does it make when timing is off vs carb sync vs valves vs cam chain? Is there a different noise type for each? I feel my engine ticks louder than it should but I don't have anything to compare it to except youtube videos.

I think the loud ticking noise is a carb sync issue.

Get a long screwdriver and, with the engine running, set it against your ear at the handle an put the tip on different parts of the engine so you can hear where the noise originates. It's like a hard stethoscope, and REAL accurate in helping to sort out where that noise is coming from. ;)

Will do Hondaman. I've adjusted timing and valves but while I think I did it correctly, I'm not 100% sure.

Not sure I understand how carb sync could cause a 'tick' but then it might depend on what exactly we are calling a tick. Classic tick sound for me are loose tappet adjusters or an exhaust leak at the head. The leak can sound just like a tick as well.

Carb sync, at least for me, will manifest itself in rough idling and a lot of primary chain and clutch slapping noise.

Noises are hard to describe, and even harder to accurately capture in a Youtube video it seems.

but.....+1 on Hondamans suggestion. I bought one of those $3 mechanics stethescopes from Harbor Freight. Only used it once but it paid for itself right then and there.

I got a good deal of ticking before I clipped a half inch from the plug wires into the plug caps.
That and I goofed up my timing adjustment once.

cyncro takes chlutch rattel..not valve ticcing.

..rattel are not so melodisk  ..its more like bolts in a tin can rattel araund..no melodi or systematic..just caos..inside the engine..like punk music...

valve ticcing are more stabil melodi..and the same tema hole time...like kraftwerk...

That was the best description of ticking I've ever seen.
