Starter issue?
« on: December 12, 2014, 05:54:35 PM »
Okay I have recently purchased a low mileage K1 750.  I has been sitting for about 30 year+-.  I got the bike running yesterday but with the kick starter because when I would push the starter button it would crank over a few times and then stop like the battery was dead even though it was fully charged.  The starter didn't sound too healthy when it would crank.  I cleaned the ground on the frame by the seat latch I swapped out the solenoid with one of my other bikes the starts fine I also swapped the fuse cleaned the terminals on the fuse box.  Would the bike not being started for 30 years somehow effect the starter itself.  I also bought a brand new battery today and fully charged it with my trickle charger.  and still no better.   My next step I guess would be to remove the starter which I have never done before I assume you remove the starter cover and the 2 bolts at the far end of the starter that hold it down what else is there any tricks or things I should know?  Also once I have the starter out what should i look for or clean and or lubricate?   Thank You...

thek the brushes..they are short even as new..klean up the komutator. fine sandpaper..and hobby nife to klean betveen lamells.there must not be any oil or dirt inside..you can vask all parts in fuel..it dont hurt anything..and just grease the small brushing vhen it goes together..its all vho need lube..

if there are oil inside thange the bearing and seal..it kosts not mutch...it can actuly only be mounted at one vay...but  make some marks ...before split.then it are easyer to get the parts korrekt lined up
i kan not speak english/but trying!!

When my starter crapped out I just got another one from a member here. It's hidden so it doesn't have to be pretty.

Okay here is what I have found out.  This morning after a restless night of sleep(trying to figure this out in my dreams), I pulled the stator cover off to find there was no flat washer on the end of the small shaft that goes into the cover.  Then I did some further investigating only to find the washer was behind the gears on the shaft ugh... Whoever had taken the stator cover off to polish put the washer on wrong.  Which is why it wasn't starting it would get bound up.  so I pulled the shaft out and removed the gears hit the starter button and it turned over with ease.  so I put everything back together and nothing wouldn't spin over at all.  I removed the cover again and the gears were bound up again.  I freed the gears and shaft up again replaced the cover and again nothing.  Not sure if I screwed up the starter when I was trying to start it?

Figured it out...   ::) Removed the starter and found there to be excessive end play on the starter shaft probably from me trying to start so much. I though it was getting worse the more I tried.  Removed a started that I had on a project bike of mine and no end play at all on it.  Installed it in the K1 and perfect starts with ease... Thanks for all the input guys especially you Jayelewin for you youtube videos on the starter removal....... Now back to working on the little #$%*..... ;D

Kev
I would suggest get a starter motor kit (not expensive) while it's apart and replace everything with new parts, clean it up as explained.

Also when you put it back together take note of the alignment marks and ensure you put it back with these marks aligned.

It'll spin like new.
