No Spark on a CB550
« on: January 02, 2015, 11:18:10 AM »
Hello there,

I have a 78 CB550 that came with a lot of missing parts.  After getting all of the wires connected, I got it to turn over but there seems to be no spark on any of the plugs.  I took the coil to the moto shop and they said it tested good, I cleaned the points and the gap reads to spec, stator coil reading a resistance of 1.2ish and is ungrounded.  The clutch (i think) and kickstand switches have been connected to bypass.

My question is:
If there is no headlight, tail light or blinkers installed, does that mean the circuit is open and therefore will not allow spark?  Do I need to connect the neg and pos in order to "jump" and close the circuit for it to run?

I am going to go and clean the stator connections (to try to get the resistance down to the .35 spec), and test the capacitors to see if they are good (the whole points plate looks pretty new tho.

Thanks in advance for your insights,

Really need to trace where power is when the key is on.   The black/white striped wire provides 12v to the coils. Start there and trace it back..  The kill switch connection in the headlight cover is a good suspect

Good suggestion since the handlebars are not even mounted per the picture.
