1975 CB550F Wheel bearings

Just want to start off by saying thanks for all the help from everyone on this site.  I am getting a lot done to the bike this off season.

I am getting ready to do the wheel bearings but my factory manual does not give direction on which wheel bearing to install first.  Does the retainer side get installed first and bottomed out into wheel, then the opposite side installed until it lightly hits the spacer (not bottomed out into wheel)? And is this the case for both front and rear wheels? Thanks in advance.

does your spacer have different ends?  One large and one small?  this allows for only one way to install the spacer in the hub.
It is this way on my 750..
Find out which way the spacer sits in the hub, then, you'll have to install the bearing nearest the spacers 'small' end, first.  seat the bearing all the way down.
Now, insert the spacer, small end first into the hub, then tap in the other bearing to the point where it lightly touches the spacer. 
the spacer should be snug, but movable. 
lightly grease the inside of the spacer to ward off rust.
'78 750K (F3 engine) PD42b's, Modified airbox w/K&N  filter, 40/110 jets, 1 needle shim, IMS@ 1 turn out. Kerker + Cone 18" QuietCore

yes, your spacer (collar) has a large end and a small end, and if i'm reading the schematic correctly, you'll have to install the bearing on the (left)rotor-side, first, then insert the spacer, then the bearing on the speedo (right) side.

The retained bearing is always installed first with the retainer tightened and staked. The sleeve will not fit through the retained bearing bore because of the lip the bearing seats against. Installing the sleeve then slipping the axle through will really help installing the floating bearing, it can't get cocked and jam it it's held straight by the axle.
