Orientation of air box boots
« on: March 29, 2016, 12:03:42 PM »
Does anyone know the correct orientation of the air box to carb boots? There is certainly an offset on them and want to make sure I have them in the correct position before install. Cb750k7

They should have numbers in them. 1/4 or 2/3. Then on the insides, the grooves can only fit on the head one side and carbs the other.then turn so they all line up in a straight line.

Oops, sorry. I swear the post said carb to head boots. Just re-read it s-l-o-w-e-r this time!

airbox boots angle downward (toward the airbox)
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

I have the same kinda question but with my CB400F boots. I see David Silver sells the boots for #1/4 and #2/3 as separate part numbers. Looking at my, maybe stock original, boots I do not see any markings on them and the appear to angled the same number of degrees and for the same length, they all look identical. Looking at a period parts manual from Honda it also appears that there is no separate part number for the boots. The only part number is for the airbox with the boots attached.

Also when looking at DSS parts photos it appears that the boots are glued/cemented to the airbox. Anyone know the correct/stock Honda setup for the boots?

My 400F is a 1977. PO had siliconed the boots to the airbox so I am not 100% positive about the provenance of the boots, they could be aftermarket or Honda. The boots do have the little lineup nub on them and the airbox still has it's little line up nubs so if I could figure out the 1/2 and 3/4 orientation and whether they are glued on I could put everything back together.

I have pods on it at the moment but am contemplated going back to the stock setup or at least have the stock setup available if the next owner would want the bike stock.

Photo of PO work on the airbox and boots and after a few hours of cleanup. The boots still fit tightly and are pliable but not sure about the glue thing.

I took a close look at my boots with a 2x magnifier and I found the boot location numbers!! When I look into the airbox end of the boot that is shaped like a velocity stack the number is visible. If the boot is looked at with the position nub at 12 o'clock, the number is 90* clockwise or at 3 o'clock close to the edge of the airbox end of the boot.

I have a set of 1-#2, 1-#3 and 2-#4's. I am going to assume that 2's and 3's are the same and 1's and 4's are the same. Does that sound correct? I am making this assumption because DSS only sells two different part numbered boots.

Now if I can figure out if glue was used by Honda for sealing or just for ease of production line assembly.
