Yes, they are aluminum.  The sides are thicker, meaning more piston contacting the pads, which can't be a bad thing.  The outside dimensions are exactly the same.  I used plenty of copper grease when reassembling...

I never heard of that.

Break assembly lube I have.

I posted a pic of a homemade  seal tool in tricks. It's made out of a piece of  1/8  copper  tubing, curved and one end pounded into a spoon shape. Great for prizing them out without tearing them up.

Copper grease where the piston touches the back of the brake pad (stops squealing) , and copper grease on the bolts (stops them rusting).  No copper grease on the internals!
