Throttle cables for CR carbs...pic
« on: October 10, 2006, 06:46:44 pm »
Guys,

My CR carbs have arrived and I am itching to install them.  I was wondering if you have any advice on which throttle cables I should use.  My bike is a '72 CB750 K2.

Thanks,
Sparty

There's like five slots for cables in those things, right?  Your stock cables should fit right in. At least they did for me using stock cables from a '75 750F which I assume are the same as your K2.

Sparty,
I don't know the answer, but it looks like the mount on my F2, and I'd bet f2 cables would work.

I've read that other people were able to use their stock cables; however, my stock pull cable ('77 CB750) was too long, so I shortened it about 1/2".  I do have few pieces of advice, though.

Once you get the cables all set, attach them to the carbs before you attach the carbs to the insulators.  It's nearly impossible to attach the cables after the carbs are mounted.

I had a tough time trying to get my CR29's to mount into the insulators.  I purchased new insulators, and all went well.

Unlike the stock carbs, the idle adjuster is in the center, and it's a pain to adjust because you have to lift the tank everytime you do it.  MRieck outlined how he made a remote adjuster: Keihin CR Thread.  I haven't tried this yet, but I want to do it sometime.

You may have already figured out that the CR29's don't use a choke cable.

Congrats Sparty.

Do as burmy says and fit the cables before you mount the carbs.

I can't remember the boots we used but I think they was F1 or F2.
If you can hang on for about two and a half hours I will make a phone call to Chris as it was him that bought them.(it's 4.15am now in the UK)
If you don't want the rubber covers, I'll have them off you as we have lost ours and are useing bath plugs.  ;D
Stock cables will fit but we got new cables and quick action twist grip.

Sparty, I have just spoke with Chris and like me he was not sure if F1 or 2, but they are of one of the Fs.

They are a different shape to the K ones and make installation very easy.

If the F1 rubbers are a lot different to the  F2, maybe someone on here can post pics of the rubbers then I will recognise them.

Sam.

F1 rubbers are the same as K1-K6.  F2 rubbers are shorter and more angled.  I sent both a F1 and F2 rubber to Mrieck when I wanted to know which would fit his CR's and he picked the F2. I ended up using the F1's cause they were newer and more pliable.

The F2 rubbers are 2mm larger ID at both the carb AND engine side so if you use them you might want to use something other than OEM clamps or you'll more than likely have air leaks. The K8 carb rubbers are 2mm larger on the carb side but identical to the K2 on the engine side(they look the same as F2 but aren't).

Sparty, try mounting your carbs using the rubbers and cables from your K2. I think it's gonna work.

Thanks guys, it is all great advice.  My current mani rubbers are getting a bit stiff.  I plan to try and use my current stock setup and see how the carbs like that.  I thought about installing a new sportbike push/pull throttle, but like you suggested, I'll try what I currently have first.  I am looking forward to the claimed 10% HP increase, or about 7 HP for my current setup.

Sparty,

You're going to love those carbs. I have a pair 31mm CR Specials on my 82 750F and they are great!  Enjoy.  I had some jetting issues so I took my bike to ECS Dyno in Mesa and he dialed them right.

I used F1 (same as K) rubbers but have seen lots fitted with the dumpy F2's.
If you want a nice throttle without the switches then most modern sports Hondas use the same fitment.
The vfr400 throttle I used came with cables that fitted perfectly. The top mount makes the cable a ticht fit with the frame top centre tube so fit them first.

In the UK anything over 40 years old only needs insurance and Fuel.
