Charging issues CB7650F
« on: February 21, 2015, 05:53:29 PM »
I have a known good battery, stator tests good, rectifier tests good and the regulator test good. Using TwoTired's electrical checklist I did the following:

Quote
H - Assuming D, E, F, and G have not found faults. We can verify all the of the charging system minus the regulator is functioning correctly, by using a temporary jumper to connect the disconnected white wire (normally attached to the REGULATOR) and connecting the White directly to the the battery POS terminal.  Repeat the B and C tests.  However, if at any time the battery voltage rises above 15V, stop the test.  Such an indication would prove the charging system capable of maintaining a known good battery.  If this test never achieves 15V, then there is a wire/connector issue in either the ground path leading back to the battery NEG terminal, a wiring/ connector issue withe the rectifier RED path to the battery POS terminal, or you made a mistake in D through G.

I got no change using the jump wire, 11.72v at 3000rpm and up. How would I go about solving this charging issue? What areas should I look to clean/inspect or should I replace the wiring harness all together?

I'm going to tell you to clean, tighten or replace EVERY connector. Don't forget your handlebar switches when checking voltages. I'm also going to tell to you check your voltages on BOTH sides of the ignition switch as well as clean the engine/battery ground connection. Replacing the wiring harness won't hurt and it could be a good idea but may not be an issue. An after-market harness IS available as is a replacement lower harness for the alternator. All the other connectors can be had from Vintageconnections.com along with the crimper tool which is a must if you go this route.

There is a small red/white wire close to the Plus connection on battery, (rectifier via start relay). That bullet plug will easy become damaged. I saw that before any practical issues and replaced the bullet plug with an isolated flat socket, pin.

On a 75/76 CB750F??

NO, Not F where red/white from rectifier is routed different than K....  I was a little bit too quick there. Good you were awake :)

Thanks guys. Looks like I'll be getting to know my wiring harness better.
