Carb - Brass choke linkage - Where to get or how to restore
« on: March 26, 2015, 06:42:08 AM »
Hey Everyone,

I have a few CB500K0's  I have seen some beautifully rebuilt carbs where the choke linkage looks brand spanking new...  Im wondering how that is possible.

Are the parts pressed out of the individual carbs themselves and then sand blasted and if needed plated again?
If so whats the best way to press them out of the carb as I do not know and would like to know a little more about what it would entail

Or is there somewhere you can buy them?  (Which I highly doubt)

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

James

You can polish them in place with Solvol and a toothbrush. If you remove the choke plates the shafts will come out: the plate screws are peened in back by KeiHin so they won't come loose, filing them down a bit before unscrewing them helps a lot but it's a fiddly job. I replace the OEM screws with SS socket button head screws using threadlocker. Removing the plates lets you work on polishing them up too, although nobody will see them with any air filter in use.
The brass parts are all uncoated, so after your painstaking polishing they will tarnish again eventually. Gold (ok, nickel?) plating would look nice forever, though!

There isn't much brass on the choke linkage.  The little bits can just be polished as said.  The rest is mostly zinc plated, depending on year clear or a yellow version.  They would just need to be replated, sandblasting would be a no no, too coarse and would leave too much pitting.

Glass beads or soda would work.  Even just tumbling it in some media.  Then send it to a plater or do it yourself with a kit.

Thanks.  I came across this on eBay and was quite intrigued by it.   http://m.ebay.com/itm/331511864559

I'll give soda blasting a go and hopefully remember to take some pics

Looks like in his description that I didn't see before that he gold zinc plated it.

That guy does good work. The gold pieces are just zinc plated I believe. Forum member tweakin bought a set of those and was happy with them.

Can I really charge $200.00 to sync carbs?

Looks like he does good work.  There's only a couple things I don't like and that I think are important:

1.  He uses rebuild kits of some sort and appears to use the whole kit.
2.  His pictures of the internals are from a totally different set of carbs, and that is the case with all the listings I've seen (notice silver plating on pictures with the bowls off).  Then in the description it says "Unlike most, I am willing to show you high definition pictures of the exact carbs you will receive!"

Aesthetically, the man can powder coat and polish fantastic.

Agreed...  In other news I fired up the soda blaster yesterday and the carbs came out great.  Ill post some pics when I can as I didnt take any yet.  The choke linkage came out great along with everything else.  I kept the carbs all mounted together as I have broke this carb bank down too many times to want to do it again (for now) I taped up the holes and blasted away and then sprayed down with some kroil as its all I had on hand and will hit it up with some carb cleaner soon.

When you soda blast them, you really, really, really need to clean them very thoroughly when you are done.  That soda can end up in places
that you don't think it can get.   Clogs tiny openings and passages very effectively.
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

Yup, but it dissolves compared to using glass beads...  Thanks.
