Extra piston ring in my set what is this and where does it go

open up my .50 over rings that I received in the mail  today and discovered an extra ring in with each  set, I tried to Google,but to no avail. any one know why and where.. Thanks Paddy

The thin octagonal ring is an "expander" ring that is fit under the oil ring. The ends of the expander should be butted up against each other, not over lapping. The gap in the oil ring should be midway between two corners of the expander.

Thank you makes sense,I have never worked with the 1/2 piece oil ring before..
