The rubber is pretty much shot on my stock rims (19" front and 18" rear), and both rims are pretty rusty.  I was thinking either:

A) sandblast, primer, and powdercoat the rims, new spokes, new tires
Or
B) buy all new stuff, and swap the front to a 18" rim while at it
I definitely want the front and rear wheels to be be the same size/look (fat front tire)

Questions...

What size tires?  Which brand?  18" front rim, who makes it?  Anyone know of a 'how to' for this?

I like Bridgestone, Dunlop and Avon tires for best performance.

I'd buy new rims and stainless spokes if you are going to replace, do it right!

Buchanan's out in Cali has rims, spokes and nipples, and will do the work for you if you're intimidated by making your own wheels. www.buchananspokes.net  Not cheap, but I have never heard anything bad about them. I plunged ahead and tried relacing wheels myself, and it was easier than I thought. Use the excellent instructions posted by members of this forum before you proceed.

Some people really object to changing the front rim size. I imagine it will change the handling somewhat, but I love the look of slightly oversize, same-diameter wheels and tires (H-D 48, for example, and most custom bobbers).  If my project bike ever reaches riding condition, it'll have 18s front and rear, one size wider than stock. I ride like the old man I am, so I'll never push it to the point where the change will make any difference.

I may be goin' to hell in a bucket, but at least I'm enjoyin' the ride. . .

I'm looking for new rear tire in size 120/90-18.
I have now Metzeler Lasertecs  front 100/90-19 H and rear 120/90-18 H. Rear tire has only 3mm tread depth.  Less than half depth in only 2500km's! Total will be less than 5000km's (3000miles). 8000kms (5000miles) would be better and what my old Metzeler ME-99 gave back in the 80's

I'll try Dunlop Arrowmax StreetSmart next time. I guess it's soon time to order when I do not want to wait until tire is completely flat. Max 2mm left, less than 2000km's
