1966 Ducati 250 Monza
« on: April 26, 2015, 05:44:21 PM »
I've always loved the look of the bevel head singles and (and twins).     I finally got one.   A bevel twin will need to remain a dream for me, as they're above my pay grade.

The serial number says 1966, even thought the title calls it 1968, so, I'll call it a '66.

I finally got it out for a ride today and took some pictures.    The clutch was out of adjustment, and also stick.    I got it free, but, damn, it has a hard pull.    I think that a new cable might help

It was my first experience with right-foot shift.    It wasn’t bad to get used to.   Adding to that the different shift pattern (1 up, 4 down) and the heal-toe shifter made it different enough that I didn’t get confused.
I didn’t try to shift the brake pedal at all, and only once did I try to use my right foot for braking, which I caught before causing a gear change.

It still needs a few things, like a mirror or two, and a working headlight.      I only went a few miles down the road and back because of these crucial safety items.   New tires are in order too, as these are beyond their expiration date.    With the next Ephrata breakfast only a week away, this one will have to wait until June to get shown off there, as I won’t have time to address  these shortcomings this week.

It’s certainly not a fast bike, but, not bad for 250 thumper.     Brakes are “meh”, as one would expect from the non-2LS front brake.     My ’68 Honda CL175 (175cc twin) accelerates as well, and brakes better, but, isn’t as beautiful as this.

Congrats jas, that bike is a work of art.  Those Italians can certainly build some beautiful motor vehicles.
It looks to be in mint cond, I'm sure it was quite an investment.

3+ Beautiful bike! The first bike I ever "worked" on was a '60s Duc, when I was 11 or 12 years old; my job was to hold the flashlight while Chuck, the 18 year old neighbor, tried to static time the points. ;D

That is just plain delicious...has been restored?  If so, it looks like someone did excellent work.

Yes, it was restored by 2 owners ago.    The guy I bought it from is primarily a Brit-bike guy.   He was losing some storage space, so, this, and another Ducati single was the first to go.     I had it shipped from mid-Ohio to my place in South Central PA.   The other one ended up being bought by a guy about 15 miles from me.

That red bike is a Mach I.   It, and the Diana, AKA MK3 that replaced it is more desirable than the Monza.  The engines on them are in a higher state of tune, likely about 24 HP, vs. 19-20 for the Monza.

So do any of these have the Desmo valves?

If these are  OHC, what is on the side of the jug that looks like a pushrod tube?

The first production Ducati with Desmo valves was the 1968 Mk3, which was available in 250, 350, and 450cc displacements.   The 250cc Desmo made 30 HP at 8,000 RPM (1 1/2 times that of the 250 Monza).

I thought I'd throw this up, not mine but close by if anyone wants me to broker a deal. Not sure what these are worth but a lot less in this shape is what I'd figure.
