K8 Starter Removal
« on: May 12, 2015, 06:47:58 AM »
Hey Guys,

I've been working toward removing my starter, but I can't seem to snake it past the cam chain tensioner.  Based on this, I'm guessing the cam chain tensioner needs to come off?  Can somebody walk me through that process?  I have not yet adjusted the tension at all, so this will be a new process to me as well.

Thx

The cam chain tensioner is just 3 M6 bolts, easy to take it  off.

To adjust it after you put it back is easy too, recently discussed, let me find it for you - but manual covers it too.

Dang, I miss the google search here.

Anyway, you want to set the 1-4 T line (T as Top Dead Center) against the marker under the points plate.  Use a long wrench to turn the engine over, never back, always clockwise!  When the T line lines up with the marker, take off the valve adjustment cover for 1st cylinder, if it indeed is Top Dead Center, the valve arm will have a play that you can feel.

If not, turn it 360 degrees and this time it will have play.

Now you are ready to adjust the tension, turn the crankshaft 15 more degrees forward, loosen up the nut and than the bolt on the tensioner and let it jump forward.  Tighten the bolt and the nut and you are done.

If you take the tensioner off, take it apart, clean it and lube it and make sure the shaft moves smoothly, sometimes it takes some polishing to remove marks from the bolt on the shaft.

There is a gasket that goes under the  adjuster, but light coat of gasket maker will work too - I never bother with gaskets at this place.

Nothing wrong using gasket maker on SOHC4 engine, but globs of siliconm loose in the systems are engine killers, use very little of gasket maker, I usually take a small knife and spread it like butter on the sealing surface.

ive got your back Prokop  ;)

as for the tensioner unit itself, once its out, let off the screw and lock nut, and pull the plunger out.  you'll need to check the flat of the plunger post to see if it has any burrs, or divots from heavy handed PO's.  if it does, do your best to remove them with a flat file.  you dont want your screw to go back in it.
lightly grease the post, re-insert it (careful of the oring here) push the plunger all the way in, and lightly lock it in place w the screw.
put your crank at 15deg past tdc per the diag. above, mount the tensioner unit to the engine, release its lock screw, the plunger will press forward and contact the cam chain.  tighten the screw and lock nut.
done.

It also makes it easier to lift the starter motor if you screw a longer bolt into the cover screw thread (M6)
