Mysterious unconnected wires
« on: May 19, 2015, 01:50:36 PM »
I noticed these two wires loose tucked away and hidden. They're under neath and on the left side. One is black and one is green with a black stripe. Does anyone know what they go to? Here's a pic.

Once again I forgot to include that it's a 1978 CB750A.

Looking at the connector they could be your flasher wires or did the bike have a disconnect for the safety when the kick stand was down?
I think the second option is more than likely if your signals are working. I seem to recall there is some type of safety switch that is part of the Hondamatic system that may have been disconnected.
Common sense.....isn't so common!

It looks like the wires come from the carb area. It could be the leads to the vacuum switch that raises the idle speed when you put it in gear. I don't know where the other end connects, but mine comes from under the seat somewhere unless mine are connected wrong.

They would be usually connected to the 7v voltage regulator that is part of the fuel gauge circuit... :)
If your sure it's a carb problem; it's ignition,

Thanks for the suggestions guys. My flashers do work and the safety thing with the kick stand does work. You can't shift the gears with the kickstand down. I think I'll try and find that 7v voltage regulator. Because if those wires have some thing to do with the fuel gauge, that could explain why the gauge needle sometimes moves from the E spot on the gauge, and sometimes it doesn't. Could someone post a picture of that voltage regulator so I know what it looks like? If that's not it, I guess I'll try the vacuum switch, a picture of the the vacuum switch would be awesome too.

Per the schematic - there is only one green with black stripe wire on that bike - and it is related to the 7v regulator.
1978 CB750A (upgrading very, very slowly)

Past bikes - Honda: SL350, CX650C, CB900C, CB1000C, CM450A; Kawasaki: several 1972 750 H2's; Suzuki: TC90J.

Bikes I want: CX650ED, a mid-sized japanese V-twin with ABS.

those look like wires for connecting your gas gauge, do they run directly from under your tank? they usually run from the tank to the wire harness under your forks in the plastic box  on my 76 cb 750 a at least

I found the opposite ends of those wires, they do go to the 7v voltage regulator. According to the wiring diagrams, the black wire is supposed to go to the changing relay, I'm not real sure what that is, I'll have to try googling pics for that. And the green wire with the black stripe is supposed to go to the fuel gauge. I don't see how though, it doesn't seem long enough. I'll have to figure out where exactly it connects to the fuel gauge.

The short pair of wires in the picture are connected to the gear change relay, speed warning unit and solenoid valve.
Probably!  8)

Black is power coming from key switch on my 76 i ran leads off that to head light, coils, brakes, accessory jack and tail lights this week end.  My fuel gauge wires from my tank were plain yellow and green.  Im pretty certain that the safety switch is purely a mechanical function.  Doh cept that whole starter kill bit...
