Stock Exhaust Fitment Question
« on: June 04, 2015, 05:43:08 AM »
Last year when I remounted my exhaust I did it at night and the pipes were together.  I had an exhaust leak in #2 and #3.  This year, I removed my exhaust so I could put the bike on the lift and hope to solve the leak.  Last night I installed the #3 and #4 pipes in about 10 minutes.  BUT...#2 will not go.  It seems that the half moons simply aren't long enough to push the pipe in where it needs to go.  I tried both sets of collars that I had and both were the same.

Are there different length half moons cuz I'm thinking I have the wrong set.  Or is there a trick to getting the inner lip past the exhaust stud hole (where the exhaust stud screws in), cuz I can't get the inner moon to get past that for the life of me which is why I was curious as to if there are different length half moons?

how are you supporting your exhaust as you fit the headers to the head?

grab a second set of hands to support it while you line up the pipes and tighten them down.
then, mount them to the frame.  might help get #2 seated better
yes, there are 2 different lengths of 'half moons'
roughly 1" and 1.25"

I had a second set of hands, haha!  I can get the pipe seated fine and the collar set, but the half moons don't touch the exhaust lip in the exhaust port.  The inner half moon lip cannot slide past where the exhaust stud screws in.

Okay, so 1" and 1.25".  Which are correct?  The cmsnl parts fiche shows one size, but not the length.  Is it possible/easier to convert to the F exhaust mount?

Nooooo.  You have them on backwards.  ;)
Flip them over so you are running them correctly, as pictured above.

shiity drawing, but this is how the half moon collar integrates with the flange.

Are you changing the exhaust seals out too when you remove the pipes? These usually will leak if you reuse the old crushed seals.
I always replace those when removing an exhaust before the reinstall.

Common sense.....isn't so common!

Ya I had tried that just time the exhaust was off...but since I didn't put the half moons on wrong it didn't work out so well. I knew as soon as I pulled it off and they weren't crushed it was part of the reason for my exhaust leak.
