PPG Epoxy Primer - Anyone with experience?
« on: June 19, 2015, 07:01:43 AM »
Hi,

I was wondering if anyone has an experience using PPG DPLF epoxy primer.  If so I have a question or two.  Im coming into a few problems with orange peel and am thinking of doing a high build primer over it, or trying to recoat with it thinned out to minimize the peel and the wet sanding for base coat.  Im ending up hitting metal on the frame and down to the gel coat on the fiberglass tank I have in a few spots.

Cheers,

James

Epoxy primer is just designed to go over bare metal, followed by the high-build.  Spray 3-4 coats of urethane high-build, then sand it smooth with 400 then lightly with 600 before applying your base coat color and then the clear.

I like urethane myself as it sprays better, but epoxy offers more protection.  You spraying metal or plastic?

I used to use it quite a bit. Tough stuff and easy to work with.  I was mixing some up one time when some spattered on my big toe nail.  (I was wearing sandals, spare the lecture.)  I didn't notice it until a little later by which time it had dried.  I decided to leave it to see how long it would stick.  It went a month through daily showers and abrasion inside shoes and socks before I noticed it was gone one day.  I thought that was impressive.  I used to use it on car and jeep frames after blasting.  I quit using it when the price got ridiculous and went to Zero Rust for the same work.  I heard they changed the formulation a while back, hopefully it is still as good.

Greg - I'm definitely switching to urethane for my toenails. I hope it's available in my color.

Don't know if you're using an HVLP or siphon gun, but in general orange peel comes from spraying at too high a pressure if the paint viscosity is correct.

I would recommend following the tds for the paint you are using. For some paints it is a big no no to sand the base coat as it will cause adhesion issues and if you are spraying mettalic it will ruin it.
