fuel filter options
« on: June 19, 2015, 04:19:52 PM »
I currently use those brass cone filters for my tank.

Anyone have a better option given the very limited space between the tank and carbs?  Of course I can run without a filter, but I'd rather not given that it's too easy to jam up the carbs with debris.

Clean the tank properly and make sure your petcock screen and/or filter is in good shape. No need to run an external filter then.

If you run longer fuel lines from the tank petcock, you can place the external filters where ever you like. If you put a long spring inside the tubing, you can make sharp bends in your routing because the tubing won't kink. (If you use clear tubing, the springs have a cool "attention to detail" look to them) These springs are cheap and available at any hardware store. I prefer the paper filter element filters over the brass element filters. The paper element has much greater surface area and filters out much smaller particles. The paper filters are larger though. That's where the longer fuel lines come in to help with placement. One time when I added filters, I ended up with them very close to the cylinder head. I made a simple heat shield out of some thin metal I had lying around so I wouldn't have to worry about them melting.

I've tried my hand at the longer lines and ended up with air traps, so I think I'll go with the 90's like Flybox shows.

Last set I ordered from Amazon they were too big - didn't pay enough attention to the hose diameter (my bad), so I like the idea just never used them.

As for your comment Scott, don't get me wrong, nothing beats a properly maintained tank.  I personally don't like the internal filter, and an external filter is a cheap insurance policy.  That said - I prefer that the filter stay as clean as possible.

Actually my next question - the fuel line is 5.5mm, if I remember right - is that 1/4" (too big) or maybe 3/16" (which is quite a bit smaller)?

That's 1/4".   I have a mini hose clamp on the attachments at the carb and the fuel tap.  It fits tight on the filter barbs to the point I cant pull it off.

Thanks.  Seems like I always get a huge length of the wrong size and then promptly forget which was the right size - only to order the wrong size again.  Yeah I know  ???

Best is the original petcockfilter. The better aftermarket filter is the paper filter but even that I wouldn't use. Had troubles with the fuel flow all the time and abandoned them.

Spotless or properly lined tank, rebuilt petcock and in tank filter, genuine Honda 5.5mm fuel lines and spotless carbs. Works for me every time.

The filtration of the petcock sock filter or sediment screen is much smaller than any internal carb passage. If it was good enough for Soichiro......

The sediment bowl is enough to keep the fuel clean for carburetors.
