350 V 400 carbs
« on: June 28, 2015, 01:22:53 AM »
Hi. this topic has probably been touched upon previously.
Can anyone advise of the difference between the 350f and 400f  carbs. Ive heard that basically its larger main and idle jets and also emulsifier tubes may be different.
Would love to have this cleared up.
thanks

The carb rack is identical but the "setting" number is not. Honda and Keihin tested the bikes to optimize the carburetors. A carb "setting" specifies the needle cutout, needle number (specific taper profile), main and pilot jets, main orifice/emulsifier, and idle screw setting. The needle profile in particular would be designed specifically for the bike model, I've not seen the same needle number used in different ones.
For stock engine, intake, and exhaust, this OEM setup should work nicely.
There's trouble when you do mods though! Particularly with pod filters - the original needle profile and slide cutout don't suit them:
- You can't find a needle position where mixture is good through mid-high throttle, you need more fuel at some settings but lifting the needle makes other spots too rich: Keihin doesn't sell custom needles and we (typically) don't have the facilities to profile such parts accurately.
- The slide cutout is critical to avoid flat spots and hesitation. Same story as with the needles, but it isn't such a hard machine shop job to increase the cutout... decreasing it is more of a problem.

You can install the 400F spec main and pilot jets (get real Keihin ones, not aftermarket!!!) and it should run reasonably well with factory intake and exhaust. You'll probably need to raise the needles a notch and it may have some flat spotting and stumbling but I would give it a try.
