1970 cb750KO gauge restoration
« on: July 13, 2015, 03:42:42 pm »
hey guys

i would like to restore my 2 gauges for my 70 KO. i have searched and couldn't find any info on disassembling these particular gauges. the problem is that the black body of the gauge has a lip that wraps around the back side of the metal portion of the gauge so it looks and has proven impossible to get the two parts apart without either breaking the lip or the entire body. i would like to buy one of the kits which has the body / lens / jewels etc. but cant figure out how to re and re these parts without damaging them, or breaking the new parts putting it back together. anybody have any ideas or tricks?

thx a lot!

There is a crimp ring that hold the 2 pieces together, you can get new ones to replace them.

70 K0's had plastic housings sealed to the metal frame with what appears to be silicone or glue. I've never seen a crimp ring that I can remember...but I'm old.

There should be a silver crimp ring holding the 2 halves of the body together in the middle.
Go down to your local paint or hardware store and ask for a paint can opener (they are free most of the time) it's metal and has a bottle opener on one end (you will need it before your done

no crimp ring OR adhesive. it has a plastic lip that is part of the plastic housing that wraps around the backside of the gauge. making practically impossible to take it apart without breaking the housing.

thanks but i am not sure about what you mean? "You have to our cut it with a knife". perhaps a typo? i think as they are rough anyways i will break them off to free up internals and then hope that someone comes along that knows the procedure.

thx!

I have done a few and you just break off that plastic ring edge all around the bottom of the underside of the gauge. The gauge will then slide out. Then replace the entire plastic housing with one from LeCram and you will glue that one in place.

thanks for all the help guys. i just bit the bullet and started to take these apart and it all went fine. now i can order the parts from leCram when he's back from holidays and rebuild. i ran them up with a drill motor and they seem to function fine. i have a couple loose jewels but i can get those parts as well obviously. the only sticking part is the trip reset function, that seems to be fairly tight but it does turn and reset. i think it just needs to be cleaned up and some lubricant put on it. that being said is it possible or advisable to lube the gauge mechanism's? if so with what? thanks for you help. you just saved me hundreds of dollars, love this site!

thx
